A question for the members...
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:23:22 PM »
If we were to say expand the forums to a Canadian wide board how would the members feel about that? It would of course mean sections by province with some general sections, the issue I might see with that is possibly too many problems and arguments but it could be a good expansion.

Would it prevent any of you from staying with the boards?

Let me know your thoughts.

I personally would be ok with expanding the forum.  Having people from other provinces on board may lead to some arguments but i would think it would lead to more opportunities for everyone involved. Just my opinion.

I doubt it would be much of an issue to expand nation wide. More traffic would be good for this place. But I wouldn't add too many more sub forums, I think there are far too many as it is and it make it harder to find where the people are posting. Just my opinion, but I would reduce the amount of sub forums.

Paul, Great idea!
Remember the 'Alberta Game Warden', which is now the 'Western Game Warden', expanding the magazine actually made it better and gave the authors more material to write about. I'm sure the wider distribution is also good for business.

Would you go right across Canada or just stick with the western provinces? I would definitely help out in any way I can, maybe I could look after the Sask end of it as we grow!!
Thoughts??

Not saying anything bad but why would you want to do that? This is the Alberta Sportsmen forum not the canadian sportmen.. Just my thoughts. I have been on forums like that and they are not my cup of tee as I really dont care what is happening in other provinces. If I want to know I already am a member on there sites. I am not interested in what is going on Manitoba east as I have no reason to go hunt there.  But you do what ever you want.

Ditto....who wants to hear about bass or muskie fishing braggarts when we don't have them here?

Not me that's for sure..

I think its a good idea, and as for arguments your gonna get them on any forum.
And this forum is already a Canadian Wide forum, in all honesty its world wide.
Its just the matter of the people finding it.
I might brag alittle about bass if I ever get out there for them, but i'm sure i'll be drooling more over the posts about cutthroats, bulls, RMWF and who knows what else.
But more then anything, i'm looking forward to the hunting stories from out of Prov. areas.
You don't have to comment or even look at the posts that are not from Alberta, but I bet you do.....
Even if the forum does not go through a complete makeover, just adding afew areas for out of Prov posts would help alot because they will be here checking it out.
New friendships can be made, so alot of good could come from this.

I can see the arguments for both sides of this and there are good points on all sides. Personnely I don't see a problem with it, I think it would be an awesome idea. We already have a few members from out of province why not make it more available to all people. I enjoy hearing stories from all over the world and sharing with other people and learning from their experiences. I certainly don't know it all so why wouldn't I want a chance to learn more from other people and the more people sharing the better chance to learn.

I have lived in Alberta since 1989 and still own property there but since my retirement I now live in Sask (at the cabin) fulltime. I enjoy reading Sask material and I always stay on top of whats happening outdoors in Alberta. I'll always be Alberta proud!

WTS, Alberta is full of sportsman from other provinces (here for work) and I'm sure they would love to have a forum where they can find it all. My concern would be the format. Will there be sub categories, will some sections of the forum get more hits than the others? Would it still be the AS?

Paul, how about some more thoughts?

You don't want to change the site, just upgrade it abit.
New banners for each type of season to help get guys alittle into whats comming up and colour the site up abit.......
Add some sections for out of Prov posting........
I think only people that contribute to the forum should be eligable for contests. So a minimum amount of posts to get into the contest......
I'm sure i'll think of more real soon.

If it was set up like Ice Shanty (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?PHPSESSID=1c8b9604b5ffe2ace1acf4dc074e7fcd&) which has all of North America listed by province and state...I have met and fished with people from other provinces from reading their posts at Ice Shanty...I think it would be an great idea which would bring in more traffic and positive input...

I like it.  I think we already have people from all over Canada and North America here already.  The world is a small place and I enjoy travelling for a hunting/fishing trip as well as here at home.

Sorry to say I can't offer any, "Good" advice one way or another.

As to an opinion, I can offer one, as long as you keep in mind opinions are like butts;  everyone's got one and this is mine.

Since you asked............ Personally, as far as the, "gun culture", I think it would be tough to compete with gunnutz.  BC and Sask. both have good provincial forums that IMO appear to serve as a good base for provincial info.  In AB, the only other forum I know of seems to be inhabited and controlled by gov't union employee's, or in other words, children.  I had to deal with unioned bureaucrats in the past, you couldn't pay me enough to babysit them again.

As far as a nationwide forum, I'm not sure how you would do.

Beat's me Paul.  My only advice would be it's your baby, do the best you can as you see fit and that's all you can ever do.
Best of luck whatever you decide, if I mange to call in a bear for me, rattle in a buck for wife, and call an elk for son you can bet I'll gladly post pics no matter what you decide.   :)

Not sure how it would work but im game! We are all sportmen and women no matter where we are from. We all have pics, stories, and ideas that can be shared to humor, inform or just to pass the off season reading. Id love to read peoples adventures and such from places I have yet to venture or have any idea about. I think the more diversity we have the stronger it could be. And why not share and involve anyone from anywhere?

The first Outdoors message Board i was ever on was called huntshoot.com , I made some good buds through that forum for what i was wanting to do, and that was know where to hunt in BC. I had some offers to take me hunting and fishing then i eventually reciprocated with them coming to Alberta.

however it was a slow message board due to the more popular site , huntingbc.ca and there were guys and gals on both message boards just like a lot of us do with our spare time.

huntshoot was the 4 western provinces i believe but was mostly followed by BC Hunters. I also believe this site is longer active and they started another one which did not do any better.

I agree with Justin though that you could put an out of province section in here Paul.

cheers.

I don't see why we would have to lose the AS name. If it had to be expanded to give it a little more range, it could be called 'Alberta Sportsman and Company' or 'Alberta Sportsman and Neighbours'.
Just a thought!

You could title it as acronym i.e. ASN Forum Alberta Sportsman and Neighbours...
