Anyone play the stocks?
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:27:31 PM »
I got into playing in the stock market a couple years ago.  I figure it is better than gambling at the river cree.lol
I have done very well in it whether it was luck or just timing but I enjoy it a lot and spend a lot of time reading and chatting it up with others that play on other forums.
I was wondering if any of you guys get into it much?

We usually have some money bouncing around in some different places. We as well did pretty good for what we had in certainly a lot better than any chicken shit investment guy ever made me and a lot better than what any bank is paying these days. Recently though we have made some very good money in the precious metals arena and its looking very good for the future. I pulled all of our money out of the stocks and put it in real estate and the metals market.

There is going to be money made yet in the markets just not in the arena's that have been paying the last few years. The bull shit is over,, only the companies with true value and that create a substance useful are going to make it.  A lot of people are going to go flat ass broke over the next 5 years and a few are going to make a fortune,, the signs of a true reccesion,, its going to get really tough here in the next few years,, people better start buckin up..

I started by watching a bunch of stocks and pretending in what to buy for 6 months.
I spend a pile of time on Stockhouse.com and I have a watchlist of about 50 stocks I keep my eyes on all the time.  With all of the chat with other guys you pick up some and dump some as well.  I am in about 4 stocks right now.  I just had one of my companies I was in get bought out for almost double of what I first bought in at.  I also had another one get bought out that I was in and made some good money.  After watching for a while you can get a trading account with your bank.  Some the fees are crappy and others are good.  When you make a lot of trades the costs add up on the more expensive banks.
I enjoy it a lot and it keeps me busy watching and reading.  Also adds some stress when you are down but on the other hand it can be real rewarding if you hit a home run!

Hey Nube - I use to play with a small group of friends but never really put the effort into it.  I have been looking at doing some self-directed RRSP by buying and selling my own stocks.  Thanks for the website, I will have to check it out.  It would be nice to get back into it.

Played penny stocks as a hobby years ago, never more than 500 bucks into anything.  Did surprisingly well.  Problem I saw was while it was actually pretty easy to make a little, to start making real money at it you either have to be married to the trading, or play in big numbers.  Since I like to sleep at night, that counted me out.   :)

I made good money on some stocks just by selling them on friday's and buying them back on monday, I kid you not.  Personally I would say as a hobby, have at'er, and you'll come out with beer money to burn.  Just start watching a half dozen or so penny stocks and chart their movement a couple times/week.  Eventually you'll see some that invariably go up and down, and back and forth the same amount, almost like clockwork.  The other thing to be wary of is check out their portfolio.  Some stocks are in business only to sell more stocks, (yes, it's that bad).  Others are good small companies whose assets match their stock worth, or are undervalued on the market.  Be warned though, for every one good company on the stock market there's at least 20 that are at best shells, at the worst, just a con IMO.  If you view the stockmarket as about a half step above buying contraband in a back alley and never risk more than you're willing to loose you'll do fine.  If you risk big, well, you're on your own, haha.

I basically quit when it seemed everyone was doing it.  I've always been a believer you just watch what every one else is doing with their money, and don't do that.   ;)

It seems like everyone I talk to except a few say they just pissed away money with stocks.  The rest have said they made good money.  Maybe I just have horse shoes.
Got a news release this morning and have a buy out offer on T.IAE.  Got my fingers crossed for a quick easy double!!

If a guy had money, he should be buying every natural gas producer's stock he can, and as much of it as he can.  They're trading stupidly low right now because gas is $2.40/mcf AECO C.  Gas is selling for $14/mcf to the Japanese right now, and 2-4X that AECO price on average everywhere but NA.  Gas demand is growing around 7% a year world wide, and gas production is actually beginning to decline in North America due to the switch to oil.  That arbirtrage will work itself out and gas prices will come back here, sooner than later, and when they do, they're going to come roaring back.  There's huge money to be made for anyone with some deep pockets and staying power.

Just my investing rant for the day...

Your right Waxy.  A guy could possibly make a pile with the prices of some of those gas stocks.  Personally I think you will be sitting for quite a while to see any real gains and don't have the patience.
Copper and Uranium will be big in the next year or 2.  Sold some T.CUM  this morning for a %20 gain in the last few weeks.  Will buy in if she drops back down around the $5.75 mark.  Could possibly see $8-10 in the next 1-2 years.  The company has everything going for it.

Still waiting to see if I hit the jackpot with T.IAE and a buyout bid this next week if not tomorrow hopefully.  If she doesn't sell I think I will pick up some more as it will drop back down.  Production should double shortly and next year double again and I can't see this flop in the next year!

Anyone else got any they are buying.

I have been playing the stock market for the last 10 years, I have only lost money, wish I would of bought toys instead. Luckily I am up on real estate so I am probably even on my investments. What are some good Canadian stock forums you guys look at?. I use Canadian money forum and financial webring but they are not very active. Money Sense use to have a good forum but its all spam now.

I agree with Waxy, speculating on gas is a good move right now.

I think otherwise on the gas.  It has been down for years it seems and I don't see any major changes coming.
Some oil stocks are ready to go right now and I see a big jump in Uranium in the next year or 2.  I should get some drill news on FIS this next 2-3 weeks and should see a good jump in price.  I am also waiting on the bid price that IAE is being sold at in the next few weeks as well.  It is also seeing a double of production in another couple months as well.
Copper is going to be huge as well as the copper reserves are low and China is ramping up to do some major builing and in need of copper next year.  I have a bunch of Copper Mountain stocks CUM.  I also bought into some INA Friday at .53 and is expected to hit $2.50-$3 in a year or 2 possibly.  If drill results are good on FIS this month I plan to dump all of it and it willretrace back to the lows for the summer again and load up then.

I have to agree on the gas speculation. The best cure for low gas prices are low gas prices! The companies are shutting in wells, most companies are pulling back on completions unless it's liquids rich. By this time next year gas should be over $3.50/GJ and when the LNG plant opens in Kitimat prices will rise even more.

A good company to look at is http://tmx.quotemedia.com/quote.php?qm_symbol=TOU They are under valued and as gas rises look at them to be bought up by a major player (possibly Shell again)

Personally I would stay away from gas for a while,, its going to be quite some time before it rises and when it does it will happen slow so a person will have time to buy in and not loose much. Definitely look at some smaller oil players, oil is going to stay strong for a while.

Black Pearl is a company I am keeping my eye on. They have been building some revenue drilling in the Lloydminster area. They are gearing up to open a SAGD operation just north of Wandering River. they have done a few STRAT wells in there and their land shows promise. They plan on going for it in the next year or two. Check them out they are worth a look.

Almost bought Black pearl a couple weeks ago.  I have had it on the watch list for about a couple months now and you are right, it is a good one to look at!
