Best Sunglasses?
« on: May 11, 2011, 08:43:22 AM »
I've been buying the cheap $20-30 polarized ones for years now because I always tend to lose them or wreck them. My eyes are getting more sensitive these days though and I've got a little more $$$$, so I figure it's time I stepped up and actually bought myself a good pair of sunglasses.

I've been using the same pen at work for like a week now, which is a personal record, so I figure I'm ready for the responsibility.

Any recommendations?  I'd primarily be using them for fishing and driving, and polarized lenses are a must.

I'm kind of in the same boat.  I always destroy my sunglasses, but I'd like to get a half-arsed decent pair of polarized glasses for when I'm out fishing.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread.
Just puttin' it out there...

I recently picked up a set of Bolle's they were about $150 the lenses are great but essentially its the same plastic junk as the $20 glasses. Really the extra money is for the lense.

I've got a pair of underarmour polarized glasses and they are pretty good. They range from $200-350. The frames are a little softer so they bend a little better than the cheapy's, another brand I have tried are Smiths. If you can find them, the sliders give you the option of swapping out the lenses.

I picked up my Bolle's at Costco a few years ago. They came with interchangeable lenses and have been through the wringer. Costco seemed to have a good selection of polarized sun glasses providing you can get by all the people in the aisles trying to eat for free  :).

My Maui Jim's were "borrowed" by a friend visiting from Belgium a few years back. For the week that I had them I was very impressed... not so much so the following week when I discovered them missing.

I have been wearing Revo for 3 years now.  I love them.  They wrap around most of the way and are light and polarized.

Great in my opinion.

I have been wearing prescription Maui Jims for several years. I broke them a couple of times and my optometrist replaced the broken pieces without hesitation. They have some new designs now which are said to be better than my current ones.

I go with Oakleys with replaceable lenses. I can replace the lenses every few years but the frames are still going strong.

My girlfriend got me a pair of Oakley's for christmas, and I will NEVER wear cheap sunglasses again.  There is a model where the arms of the sunglasses snap in and out, in case you sit on them/abuse them, I would recommend them to you.  Mine cost about $220 with polarized lenses, and they are very clear.

my 2 cents.

i have a pair of oakley half-x.  they are expensive.....even for oakley standards they are pricey.  i have had them about 8-9 months and they are the clearest sharpest glasses ive owned.  i had other oakleys, and nikes, but these one win.  a week i discovered them broken?!?  im pretty sure a kid threw something on them or something as they were sitting on the console in the truck, and thats not where i left them.

at any rate, this is where it gets good.  i went back to where i bought them looking for some help.  o dice.  i was in calgary a few days later and checked in at the oakley store in chinook, and they told me to call oakley canada in quebec....no dealer has parts.  it was just an arm broken at the hinge by the way.  so i call and explain my issue.  he asks if i have the receipt as warranty will cover it...if not 95 bucks to replace the whole frame.  i told him i would check with the guys i bought them from as i didnt have it, and if not no biggie, ill pony up.  he said, hey no sweat, ill just fill out the paperwork that it was provided......cool.  i also asked about spare lenses.  he said yup, i have what you want....120 bucks.  i says ok.  he said what the heck, youve been asking me nicely to help you instead of growling at me wanting the world for free.....how about 80 bucks?  i said ya man, thanks.

i dont know if i caught a good guy on a good day or what, but service like that from a big company doesnt seem to be all that common anymore.  long story short.....i recommend oakley not only for a quality product, but also for great service.

I have several pairs of Maui Jims, they are the best lenses out there. I have the glass lenses as well as the plastic offshore lenses and they are both good, when a pair gets damaged I take them to my optometrist and they fix them, usually it's about $90 bucks to have both lenses changed and they are stocked in Ontario so it doesn't take forever to get them back.
Yeah that what he said........

I'm a 10 year Oakley fan, great optical quality, great warranty, great looks as well. No question for mr it Oakley all the way. Also its amazing how much better a person takes care of their glasses when they fork out a few hundred bucks for them.

I'm leaning toward the Oakleys, but I will check out the Maui Jims too, they get a lot of good feedback on the fishing forums.

For the Oakley guys, what model is most popular?

What lenses are you using?

Polarized lenses are a must, but there's so many color choices, a guy would have to buy 4 or 5 pairs to cover all the bases.  I like the idea of the "shallow blue" for fishing, but maybe not as an everyday wear color.  I've always been a fan of the more basic "grey" for sunlight and "brown" for overcast.

Thanks,
