Black Bear Spear Hunting

Interesting that under armour is dropping these guys for vdeoing their hunts.

Whats everyone else's thoughts?

Although it a legal way to hunt in Alberta, personally, I believe we all need to use some common sense in the material we post on social media and posting this type video will have a high probability of not looking good for hunting.  To me, common sense tells me that this video was going to have negative outcome for the hunters and a black eye for hunting.  This result does not surprise me.

I 100% agree that we all need to think twice about what goes on social media. But my opinion is that we are all hunters and we need to stand behind fellow LAWFUL hunters. Some may not agree with his method but in a highly political situation as this, if we turn our back on them now then what is next. I support all methods of hunting as long as it is legal and that is my stance. Save the ethics of it for a camp fire and a good round of debate.

I hope the bow hunting community is now happy that spear hunting is banned.

They have achieved their objective of banning spear hunting.

Are rifle hunters next on their sanctimonious list given a government that hates hunting and fishing?

greylynx - so why an immediate attack on bowhunters?  not even sure why you jumped to that.  My question was peoples thoughts on what the hunting community puts on social media.  I did not bash any form of hunting nor did I suggest that it should be illegal.

I agree with Kyle.  I am all for every type of legal hunting - my opinion is that we need to use common sense in how we display this to the world. Certainly Under Armour is not supporting them as you suggest.

I agree with your thoughts weste. We definetly have to stand behind one another but like you said why throw gas on the fire. Got to tell you I cringed a little when I saw the video last week, thinking why would a person post this. Just go about your business and shut it yah know. People had to know it was going to create controversy. Are they just looking for it.

So I've been getting calls from non hunting friends and family on this one.  It came up at dinner with another couple that doesn't hunt.  These people, on the fence, want to put me on the hot seat.  They want to hear me explain, and rationalize this practice.  At first I found it frustrating, but soon realized that I must have done a good job defending other legal activities.  They think that they have a "gotcha" moment.

What made it hard to defend at first was I just couldn't relate.  Who would wanna use a spear when they make such great bows, rifles, shotguns, and muzzle loaders?  What kind of cheap thrills were these people after?  Then I remembed that the same can be said for all hunting  instruments.  The people most outraged by this video will not stop until all hunting is stopped.  These are the same people who wanna see trapping stopped, firearms banned, and probably have a beef with fishing as well.

Though I don't like the kind raw raw celebrations seen in some hunting videos, and will probably never hunt with a spear, I will support the practice.  Only as long as it is legal, and the animal can be harvested quickly.  Let's not give into social justice warriors that have no intention of stopping at spear hunting bears.  It's no different then not owning an AR15, but signing the petition.

I don't think any of us would want to stop this practice I know I wouldn't. I think what we are trying to get across I know I am is, why post it on social media, you have to know it's only going to attract a lot of negative attention. Like I said, just go about your business and shut it (not you).

This whole thing is a prime example of the people problem.  The more people you get involved the more reaching and petty the bs gets.  It's like a cancer that spreads quickly through social media.

Most of the problem people seem to have is with the celebration.  Well spend a few minutes online or wherever you get your hunting videos and it won't be long before you find someone celebrating in like to a bow/rifle hunt.  A lot goes in to hunts and people get excited sometimes God forbid.

I've read/listened to a lot of negativity towards baiting.  Usually by people who have never done it before.  I'm pretty sure anyone with experience baiting could relate to how much work, money and time it takes.

Some "hunters" have saw it fit to use this hype train as a jumping board to spout off against trophy hunting and baiting.  Cheap.

Can't help but think that most people that are either hunters or indifferent would watch that video and have respect (if even only somewhat) towards the hunter if there wasn't such a buzz around it.  The guy obviously put the time in.  He hit the bear square dead.  What more do you want?

Be honest with yourself.  Are you concerned with the video because you want to be, or are you concerned because you are supposed to be.

To be clear I will be boycotting under armour.  I only have some of their golf apparel but it's also on the boycott list.

Will be boycotting Underarmour as well.  They really let the hunting community down.
