Just a thought, but maybe a short hunting, fishing, or hiking article writing contest.  We all like to read about adventures.  It seems like all we get to read in magazines or in the regs is the material from the same half dozen guys.  I bet there is more writing talent lurking (I had to use that word) out there.  We should keep it reasonably short, kind of something like you would see in a magazine article.  It could also be accompanied with a pic or two.  Maybe a couple of categories for the prizes, one for adults and one for kids.  Kids always have to write essays for school.

We could have it judged by the membership on here.  I think it would best to judge on content and interest level rather than making it into a grammer lesson.
Maybe if something really good comes out of our contest, we could submit it to for submission to a magazine or the hunting or fishing regs if it is a "how to".

Lots of ideas come to mind for topics.  Hunting trips that pushed your limits.  How you shot your biggest deer ever.  Camping trips into the mountains, etc.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?
Gettin' down on the mountain, gettin' down on the mountain

X2 This is a very good idea G.M. ;)
I would be interested in publishing the story that wins. I have a small group of media people who would like to see this as well.
kids fishing stories are really a lot of fun to read. Last year I wrote an article about forum member here. It turned out to be a huge hit on City TV. They also publish there stories on line as well.

Just a thought that as most of us have all of our own gear.  We run a contest where some of the gear would go to a deserving young person who does not have thier own gear.  Would be an added bonus if one of our member's could take the the young person out with their parent or gurdian and introduce them to the outdoors.

We run a program down south here where Lethbridge Fish and Game and the Lethbridge Chapter of Pheasants Forever work together to introduce first time hunters to Pheasant hunting.

Usually the day works like this:
AM - shooting instruction and warm up - individual shooting instruction at a sanctioned shooting range. Lots of clay, and a confidence builder with gun safety and a bit of practice.
Lunch - an information session about Pheasants and their habitat.
PM - controlled hunts over dogs. 1 mentor per hunter and a dog and dog handler. Controlled environment, and very fun for the first timers.

The birds and ammo are funded by ACA - but we also get donations and in-kind support for things to give these first time hunters a start. We have even awarded a shotgun in a raffle - and let me tell you I have never felt so good handing a shotgun over to someone as that lucky 13 year old.

Always interested in any of these sorts of things to use as prizes for first time hunters.

By the way if there is any interest by someone on here to attend - send me a PM.

I like the idea of short article.  But should limit to one per member - some of you have all the luck and have many good stories, little people like me only have one really good story (and it is a good one!).
Just get out there!

We do have a portal on the site that allows for articles. What I should do is set up a different site that RSS feeds to here and we start a knowledge base with articles sort of like my fly fishing site is (broken right now because I'm moving it to a new format). Could also do a hunting and fishing news for Alberta then we could call it Alberta's only free online magazine for sportsmen.
