Cougars in my buddies back yard
« on: May 30, 2012, 04:46:18 PM »
My buddy Ed lives in Widewater on the south shore of Lesser Slave, he has a trailcam in his backyard because the deer come through here, look at what showed up in his yard last night...

Whats the law on Cougars in your yard are you allowed to shoot them out of season? I mean my buddy has kids and he's a bit nervous about cougars in his yard. I have heard of people getting in trouble shooting grizzlies in their yards.

my hunting partner shot a cougar that jumped in a tree right beside the tree he was sitting in on his stand... it hopped up there and stared at him and flicked its tail side to side so he said thats enough...   .22 right between the eyes.... called fish and wildlife they asked us to drop it off in evansburg...  it now sits at the fish and wildlife main office in edmonton mounted...

so i would say if it comes in your yard and is threatening anything in any way than get rid of it... just gotta make sure you tell the authorities about it

Call a Fish & Wildlife officer and they will deal with it before you start losing family pets or worse. We've had a 5 or 6 cats put down around GC with similar problems. People have got to stop feeding deer in their back yards during the winter months around here.

A Landowner can shoot ( where discharge of a firearm is legal)  cougars on his/her property at any time of the year. The cougar will have to be registered, a tooth will be taken for aging, and the cougar will be returned to the landowner.

Pg. 32 of the hunting regs.

Quote
  Cougar
Any person who is the owner or occupant of privately owned land may at
any time of year, hunt (but not trap) cougar on such lands without a licence.
Hunting with dogs is prohibited under this authority. Under this authority,
registration is required within one week of the kill by bringing the skin and
skull (or intact carcass) to a Fish and Wildlife Division District office (see
page 16). A premolar tooth will be retained for aging.

When did you shoot it Wildmeat? The returning of Cougars shot by landowners is a brand new legislation this past year. A bunch were returned this past fall as the Bio's were suprised at how many were shot by landowners in 2011/2012 by the report given to our Alberta Tree Hound Association President and presented at the annual meeting.

I hunt sheep to see over the next mountain not to measure the next trophy!
