Darn coyotes- the war is on now
« on: July 22, 2011, 07:46:11 PM »
 >:( We were out salmon fishing and get a call from my Dad, who was watching the farm. "Better get home you lost 12 sheep last night". We didn't rush home, and it didn't make any difference anyhow.

12 dead sheep in one night and my mom's hubby manages to kill one small coyote. Quiet for another week and 5 more dead last night. I killed one this am and another one tonight.

17 dead sheep- that cuts into the bottom line!! The war is on now.  >:( ARRRRG.

Thanks for that! We're around Innisfail.

Got three now.

They picked on the wrong family. My wife and kids can shoot and they lost some of their prized pets. The gloves are off.

Got a damage control license now. Now I can bring out the traps and snares. I guess Wiley Coyote and friends didn't know how much hardware we have around here for their kind!!  >:(

I appreciate that. It's pretty tough hunting right now, as most of my place is in crop. We should plan some drives after hunting season. Not sure how much we actually accomplish by shooting them, it never seems to make a dent in the population-  but it feels good!  :) There have been several winters I have shot over 60 and a couple over 100, and they still keep coming.

I did manage to call one in and send him to his maker this AM. Up to four now, and three in less than 24 hrs.

The saga continues....... >:(

Well, still knockin them down and they keep coming. Got two more around the pasture this weekend. Two long range shots and two dead coyotes. Finally starting to get some good sized, adult sheep and deer killers. Must be thinning the pup crop out. One male was 40 lbs+.

Put an arrow through another BIG male when he cruised past my tree stand.

The war continues.

Doug, them buggers are pretty braizen around here. It's nothing to see 3 or 4 a day walking along the road or somewhere close by. The other day I was coming home from round lake and had the dogs with me and there was a yote coming down my neighbours driveway, broad day. The dogs made after him and damn near caught em. I have two big GS dogs but I don't really want them chasing the yotes.
Worst case scenerio, they chase after one which leads them to the pack and thats the end of my dogs.

Skunks are bad here too. Caught one in the trap Saturday (on the property) and blasted another with the 12 ga. He got in under an old shed on the propertyy and the dogs found him. I was able to haul them away before they got pissed on.
Weathers changing and the buggers are looking for dens now and they love getting in under old buildings, lumber piles or anywhere else that offers them a winter residence.
Two old buildings on the property are scheduled for burning as soon as the snow flys.

I'd be up for helping you out, but I have the same thing by my place.  Although I don't have any sheep, and they do me a favor keeping the cat population down around my place.  Daughter freaks out if I kill them, but she accept it when it coyotes that get them.  "Yeah gee sweetie, must've been the coyotes that got them again..."  ;)

Got one more last week. I love shooting them with the 7mm (or anything for that matter).

Wainwright bound tomorrow for first rifle. With the rest of the week off, I'll be getting more serious about the coyotes around here.

After listening to the dog bark half the night, I decided to check around this morning. Ended up with one on my place and a double on my Grandpas place.

Here's what a 50 grain Hornady V-Max, launched at around 3750 fps does on a head shot at 250 yrds.

Gruesome, but very effective.
