Forum Moderators and their behaviour
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:09:56 AM »

Firstly are we allowed to even have a thread disguising this subject?

I am not talking about any specific moderators or just the moderators on this board.

Just generally what they do and how they do it.

But it seems that on most forums you can't even say "moderators" with out getting in trouble.  Is there some sort of moderators union and code that all moderators belong too?

Nope, we are just average guys.  Average joes just like everyone else that like hunting, fishing, camping, and shooting.
No unions, codes, conspiracies, etc.

We are human and have opinions, likes, dislikes, and can even be wrong sometimes too.
We sometimes attempt to keep the forum amiable to most members and focused on the forum theme.

Discuss away, but I know I would be more interested in sportsman related stuff myself.
I will not ban anyone unless they are incredibly abusive and ignore warnings.  Any way, we all discuss any serious actions as a group before we act.  In most cases when we take action, it is because we feel it is offending and keeping other members away.

Why would we want to disguise our moderators.. Disguise them as what..

Thanks for your input Axeman.  I thought there would be a few members who would make some interesting comments on the topic but I see it isn't so.

Here is a list of moderator guidelines from another forum.  It seems fairly logical and well thought out.
From my experience some other forums do not hold moderators to such standards.  And it seems like on some forums things are actually run by the moderators.  They have no one to answer to for their behaviour.

Guidelines for FOG Moderators

As a moderator of FestoolOwnersGroup.com you are expected to perform certain tasks and to follow basic guidelines. We promote a friendly environment where members can freely exchange ideas in a non-offensive manner.  Moderators should promote and demonstrate the principles of the forum and are not exempt from the general rules for the forum.

1. As a moderator, you are expected to be active on the forum. This not only includes logging in frequently, but posting and initiating new topics of interest as well, especially in the board(s) that you moderate.

2. As an active moderator, you are expected to help other members by offering knowledge that you have or providing links when necessary.

3. You are expected to conduct yourself on FOG and other forums (if under the same username) in a way that represents the forum - no offensive behavior or arguments. We are the role models for the forum and members will emulate our actions.

4. Do not allow negative comments about members or vendors. Remove the post and post a comment noting the reason it was deleted in the Moderator Section. Send the original poster a personal message (PM) explaining why the post was removed and noting any applicable forum rules.

5. Notify a forum administrator of any violations that cannot be handled as a moderator and send a warning to the member.  In an instance where a member?s behavior is so offensive that it requires a ban, contact an administrator.

6. If a thread is started in the wrong board, move the thread to the correct board.

7. If a thread begins to get off-topic, split the thread and all applicable posts into a new thread with an appropriate thread title.

8. Treat all members with respect. As a moderator of FOG, you should exercise restraint when responding to an infraction. Try to keep your personal opinions regarding vendors and other members to yourself as it reflects negatively on the forum. The responsibility of being a forum moderator includes acting in a manner that is considered unbiased and level-headed.

9. Learn and be familiar with all of the forum rules and policies, including those specific to vendors.  Moderation actions should only be taken in response to a direct infraction of these rules and for no other reasons.  When in doubt, contact a forum administrator for advice on how to handle a situation.

10. All information in the moderator forums and sub-forums is considered CONFIDENTIAL and should not be shared with other members or non-members. If a moderator is found disclosing information from these forums, they will be immediately and permanently IP banned - no questions asked.

11. No moderator should EDIT anyone's posts. If there is a dispute regarding a post please send a personal message (PM) the original poster (OP) to discuss it or remove the post. Posts should only be removed when absolutely necessary - such as when maintaining the integrity of the thread or the forum and it's guidelines/rules.

12. Acting as a moderator of FOG is done on a completely voluntary basis.  Should you choose to stop moderating or plan to be absent from the forum for an extended period, please send a message to a forum administrator as a courtesy.

13. Festool reserves the right to modify these rules as needed without prior notification and to remove moderator privileges at will.

14. Festool USA recognizes that moderators dedicate large amounts of their personal time assisting with the forum. Effective November 2012, Festool reserves the right to provide moderators with products and/or discounts in recognition of the personal time that they volunteer to help administer the forum. If a moderator receives a free product and does a review, the terms by which the tool was acquired shall be disclosed.

Ive probably got more experience with moderators than most lol. Theres a few different types of moderators out there. Lots of them are decent guys (like almost all of them here) and some of them are dinks. No different than any other group in society. Cops, co workers, bosses, drivers, employees etc, as the old saying goes "theres one in every crowd".

99% of the moderators on this site seem like great guys. No power trips or chest pounding, just decent fellas talking about hunting & fishing :)

Heres a perfect example right here -> How long do you think this thread would last on that other ridiculous site? Lol. Kudos to Paul for creating and maintaining a great forum :)

So what do you define as a "good mod" or a "not so good mod"?

I have had a "warning" and I explained the situation to a mod and he responded and reversed the warning when he heard my side.

I have received a warning and when I tried to talked to the mod about it I got "stop your whining and arguing I will not reply to any pm from you"

When you give some people "power" it goes to their heads and they don't do what is good for the board but what is good for themselves.
