ft Mac or Saskatoon
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:44:21 PM »
so ive been given the choice of ft mac or saskatoon for my next job... just wondering which you guys would choose and why? they are both 3 year contracts and we have apartments rented in both places...  i was thinking saskatoon because i would be a resident and could partake in a whitetail hunt this fall.... let me know what you would do

Depends if money is the issue or quality of living.  Personally I can't stand Fort MAc but I imagine you will make way more money there.  Saskatoon is a pretty nice place and is growing pretty good.  It might be a pretty good investment to buy a house if you stay there and sell it when your done in hopes the market goes up?  Just a thought and my 2 cents

yeah we get a 3/hr raise wherever we decide to go so that doesnt matter... im thinking saskatoon will be alot cheaper to live... we get paid loa and im thinking it will go alot further in saskatchewan... ive never been to either place so its kind of an adventure for me either way

I don't like Fort Mac much myself either, I think if I had the option I would choose Saskatoon.

I have worked on projects in both and really enjoy Saskatoon.  Just seems a little less isolated to me.  Both cities have their pluses and minuses but I like Saskatoon a little more.  COuld be because I am in the middle of a project there right now and a second one starting in November, great place to do business right now.

Saskatoon is a great City.  I would do it alone just for the whitetail resident chance as you mentioned, although my real reasoning would be for archery mulies south west of Saskatoon.  Walleye fishing is awesome from shore in town too, with a real shot at 12 to 13 pound fish, especially in the fall.  A flight to Edmonton is the same as Fort Mac, and the drive is about the same, plus you don't have to deal with all the idiots driving to Ft.Mac and back either.  Twin Hwy all the way.  I would buy a place out there myself, things are just getting better and better out there for property values in my opinion.  You are about an hour and a half from Last Mountain or Diefenbaker Lakes, about 2.5 hours from Nipawin, and they have elk hunting up there too.  The area around Saskatoon is primitive weapons, and you can get a buck tag for the south, and the north part of the province as a resident.  She's a no brainer!

Not sure where you are in your life either but if your young and having kids still then I would think family life in Saskatchewan would be better as a thought as well.  Also there is way more to hunt there than in Fort Mac  My 2 cents

To me its not even a choice! The only way I go to Ft.Mac is if there is no option. You have an option take it and run. Ive worked many years in Ft.Mac and it sucks. Try and get a flat tire fixed there in the winter, its easier to drive to Edmonton and get it fixed. Same as if your truck breaks down. My company sends a truck and trailer up as it easier to get it hauled back to our dealers in Bonnyville or Leduc to get it fixed then it is to get it in up there. Also next to impossible to get into a resturaunt other than Mcdonalds from 5pm till 9pm during the busy months.
Then you have to deal with the traffic. Its worse than rush hour in the big cities when every one leaves town heading for the various projects around.

Like I said if there is an option to work elsewhere I would take it. Even for a couple bucks an hour less.

What are the "pluses" of going to Ft. Mac? Wages being equal.

Of the many many times I traveled hwy 63 and 881 heading up there I could never think of anything posative about working  there or being up there period, but that is just my personal opinion.

Sure there are guys.  You could hang out at the Oilcan all night long and get stinking drunk!!  It is a very good bar.  Upbeat and has a lot of great people that go there. ::)  Kind of like the lady I saw in the alley giving a guy a BJ because he was going to buy her a drink :o

When I worked in the patch, I avoided Ft. Mac like the plague.  Glad to hear you have done so as well.  Best of luck to you, make sure you post some pics of those big deer you get so we can drool over here...  ;D
