Tahoe Lake Kayak Downrigger Fishing
« Reply #21 on: September 01, 2013, 10:45:10 AM »
Well for you guys who have a kayak and want to go catch some Lakers at COLD LAKE it is totally possible.  I mounted a Cannon Uni-Troll 5 ST on my MalibuKayaks Pro2Tandem and took it out kokanee fishing on Lake Tahoe.  The fish were down at 97 feet.  I like this upright configuration of Cannon for the kayak and self breaking, so no levers to mess with.  I didn't really try for the Lake trout in there, but supposedly there are a bunch, nothing like fishing Cold Lake though.  Check out my rig!  Downrigger, Deep cycle batter and trolling motor, all to catch some 11-14 inch Kokanee Salmon, haha!

I was up to Crowley lake the first week of September... sorry for the late report, been working a lot. Got myself a 16 foot fishing boat with 75hp on it and had to try it out before winter settles in the eastern Sierra. Headed up to Crowley Lake for three days of fishing and it was fantastic. The weather was great besides the afternoon wind and the fish were biting great. I'm not a fly fisherman so I was trying to midge fish with a spinning rod and small float and got tons of hits, but it was so hard to hook up. Didn't actually manage landing many that way. So started fish Berkley Flicker Shads and these things were working amazing. There were periods of day where I was getting hit every or every other cast. Most of the fish ranged from 10-18 inches in length. None over 18 inches so didn't end up keeping any but that is just fine, didn't get to have my BBQ. Well I have more footage with more action but for now here is a late morning fishing with my wife and daughter out on Crowley lake hooking up with a bunch. If you haven't been before or fish cranks for rainbows this video is for you as I share some tips out on the water.

I am enjoying the cool vocal music coming from the next tournament angler.  ;) I see her fishing rod is still hanging in there. ;) The area is quite beautiful as well.

Yeah she loves fishing with me, gets so excited when we catch one!  Yes it is a beautiful area, very rugged mountains.  Not many trees but it is a very nice place to fish.

First Day out at Crowley Lake started a little slow for me and the wind picked up making fishing tough.  After drowning flies and trolling around all morning things picked up in the afternoon when we started to cast small crankbait lures - Berkley Flicker Shad to be exact.  These are a great lure and got us into a bunch of nice fish all week.  Check out the action.

Can't wait for the spring time fishing!

While some of you are still waiting for the ice to form and others are already getting out there... thought you might like this video I just posted.  Lots of fish I dream of catching!  This is the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California in HD.  So make sure to watch in Full HD if your internet is fast enough, great images.  Save yourself the trip and 45 bucks admission with a 5 minute tour.

I dream of catching one of those black sea bass or massive tuna, how about you?

My wife and I were out fishing Big Bear Lake with the Kids last Thursday 4/17 and got skunked.  Actually we had a good one on the line that I was letting my 2 1/2 year old daughter reel in.  She was playing him and all of a sudden slack line.  The 4 pound stren leader broke at the knot.  That was if for the first day.  Friday the forecast was for 10% chance of rain but the skies looked more like 100% chance.  Sure enough it started to pour on us.  We got the top up and had an excellent hour of fishing.  Hooking 6 and landing 5 of them.  These fish were caught on a slip float down 15 feet with sliding egg sinker and Berkley Chunky Cheese Power Bait.  Sorry for the poor lighting, tough to film in the rain.  Lots of fun though.

Great Song... look on the bright side, at least you don't have to mow grass all year long.  You get to switch it up and shovel white stuff the other half.  Actually most of us don't even mow our grass down here.  Yard service is pretty reasonable.

In a couple months you'll be in the green place and I'll be baking in 100 Degrees!  But right now I can't deny it is pretty amazing.  Went waterskiing again yesteday it was pretty nice.  No wetsuit just jump in the lake and go.

Now I know this is just rubbing it in :)

We actually set out to Moss Landing to go after some salmon but the wind just would not let us risk taking out the 16 foot boat on the ocean.  We decided to head inland to San Luis Reservoir for our first attempt at Striped Bass fishing.  We had never fished for these critters and it showed.  After a day of fishing we had nothing.  We searched online resources and got some helpful tips.  Hit the Wal Mart in Los Banos and picked up some Lucky Craft Pointer Minnows.  Headed back the next day but it was even more windy than the first.  Hooked up with one on down rigger at 40 feet otw in Portuguese cove, but was short lived and came unbottoned.  Had a nother strike but all we were left with was a scale.  We tried heading back to the dam and the trash racks in the extreme wind to where the stripers were stacked up.  We marked tons but these fish were just not interested at all.  It was an amazing adventure though riding these big waves.  Fun times pushing fishing to the max.  Can't wait to give it another go when the wind is a little less extreme.

Downrigger Fishing for world record kokanee salmon with GoPro Hero underwater camera catching all the action.  Big Hook Jaw Male Salmon takes two strikes underwater at the hoochie but manages to get off the hook both times.  These Kokanee are much larger than average and mirror their ocean swimming cousin the sockeye salmon.   These Kokanee are landlocked and spawn in streams while living out their life in fresh water lakes or rivers.
