I read something new this morning. Apparently there is some questioning on the location the elk was shot.

However [ and I hope this is not the case ] , Two years ago 6 guys from the company I used to work for went up to somewhere in the Lloyd / Walburgh area and paid $3500 each to shoot these massive bull Elk , one well over 400. If the brute this lady shot was at one time an Elk farm animal is it eligible for B&C ?
My travels thru Macklin and surrounding area were mainly stubble fields......not really the best Elk habitat.......? Or contrary to the flat farmland terrain do the Elk migrate in along the river from wooded area's......parks or whatever ??

1-Has that area held a decent Elk population over the years ? How long ?
2-Where do they come from ? Anyone know of when they started populating the area ?

The area they are referring to here is the Macklin area. I feel the fellow I quoted here has some valid points.

Well at the end of the day it's still a nice animal. I'm not sure why it would make a huge difference as whether it came out of a fence some years ago. I guess it depends on how long ago, if it was only a year or so then I could see it being an issue but if it's been a number of years then what's the deal. Really as long as it wasn't a canned hunt at the time.

I wonder if it has been roaming free for a while if it is considered a "wild animal"? For it to get that large it either has the instinct of a wild elk or has been hiding in a fence for awhile. You would think that if it was running around someone would have seen it, and taken it in the last few years because it still would have been a nice bull a few years ago. It would be nice  to have Alberta on the map for a record elk though.

Boone & Crockett posted photos of this awesome elk on their Facebook page and they are reporting this bull has a chance to be in the top five all-time for non-typical American elk. The exact score of this bull hasn’t been released yet, but Boone & Crockett said it’s in the high 470s range.

This elk was shot in Sept, 2016.
If the elk was shot behind a fence it shouldn't be eligible for Boone & Crockett. You would think it should be a totally wild elk.

I agree it should be wild, but say a elk that lives in Jasper around people all the time walked out of the park one day and got shot, is it wild? So this one, if it was in a fence at one time but then got out and lived off the land,is it wild? Wonder if this has ever come up before?

Yep, I see your point LA. It sure is a grey area and probably noway to prove it is a wild (tame) elk. I might send B&C a email and get their take on a situation like this. If and when they get back to me, I'll post it.

That's a brute congrats to her.  Seems like it was shot free range but the question is if maybe at one time it was fenced and to that I would say non issue.  Completely plausible that it was never behind a fence anyways as it seems nowadays a lot of the bigger elk are taken in areas that are sans wolves, heavy hunting pressure etc.
As far as an elk wandering out of a park imho it's wild.  No different than sheep where the parks and protected areas really play an instrumental part in the hunt for a lot of the bigger rams that get killed and that's been the case for a long long time.
