New Addition To The Family.
« on: March 30, 2017, 10:46:55 AM »
We picked this guy up yesterday. Nothing fancy he's an 8 month old Sheperd / Lab cross. With me being gone so much and the youngest boy basicly gone all the time and probly will be gone soon we wanted something to help  keep an eye on the place and give the wife a bit of security. We didn't want to go full breed and if we did we wanted to do a rescue so this guy fit the bill. He's not a rescued dog but one that was in town and as he grew out grew his yard and well the owners didn't want him any longer. We did some research on the cross and it has very good reviews. They have the gaurdianship of a shepherd with the temperment of a lab, so with the grandkids over lots it should be a good fit for us. He will live in the gagrage at night to guard momma and have our 70 acres to run on during the day. Seems to be very intelligent and full of life. He's a bit jumpy yet as he never got a lot of attention the last while so he's really sucking it up. Looks like he's going to have some good size to him as well. He'll keep the crack heads out of the yard.

Congrats on the new pup.
I would say he won the dog lotto with his new home compared to a yard in town with  obviously uncommitted former owners.

70 acres.  That's a lot of land to mark out with pee-signs.   :)

And the owner likes hunting and fishing.  Things are looking even better. That means meat...lots of meat in the doggy dish. :)

One lucky doggie

Congratulations to the Walleyes family for their new member.

He will work well for the place Walleye, I have a Lab/Collie and he guards this place like he is out of he's mind. Nobody gets out of the car if he don't know them. Good looking pup.

Nice lookin Dog Walleyes.  We have a black lab and it's been bombproof with the kids and my daughter really tests him some days.  With the sheperd cross should be a good all around dog.  I think going with a cross is smart, to many purebreds I see these days (including ours) are just to finicky.  Joint problems, need special diets etc.
I've had experience with a few labs and they are a pretty good watchdog when they are active but tend to turn it off a bit to much when they aren't up and about.  With that said I'm not away a whole bunch but the wife has mentioned how his attitude changes when I'm gone, kinda gets that "man of the house" attitude and becomes more attentive.  I'd imagine with the shepherd in him he would be fairly watchful all the time.

Gunner,, as we have renamed him has been great he's a real character. Full of energy, quite bratty but very intelligent. As expected some days he tries our patients as in digging up stuff around the house, dragging every loose object on the property onto the lawn, chewing up our solar lights, my archery back stops, 3D deer target lol you get the picture. He is already showing some strong guardianship traits, as he is quite leery when strangers come around and hunkers down and puts the growl on when they come to the house. So for him being so young its encouraging. He absolutely loves the Grandkids lol, smother stem to death. We are committed with Gunner to turn him into one of ours and are focused on the long term outcome so we are overlooking the pain we have now with him. The wife and I are neat freaks in our yard and my wife has dozens of flowers and some family air loom plants outside two she has are second generation plants she has protected over the years so it's a trying time lol. Going to have to do some fencing this spring to protect her stuff. But we couldn't be happier with our choice he feels like one of us already, he fits us good.

Flower beds and garden?  Hmmm.

I have a feeling dear Gunner is going to be finding out that Momma is the one who rules the roost when it comes to the yard. :) :) ;) ;D

Cheers. :)

New digs I built for Gunner this week. It's not insulated as he sleeps in the garage at night it's just to give him some shelter during the day when he's out. Complete with covered veranda for some shade when the sun is high. An odd colour for a dog house I know but it's colour matched to the house. Even the cedar stained deck lol.

Beautiful home for Gunner.

Would you be able to winterize the unit?

Stuff like straw bales and a lamp?

You are a pretty busy guy these days. :)

Yah I could insulate it quite easy grey,, glue some styrofoam to the walls and straw thrown in. But like I said he sleeps in the garage at night any how. We will see come fall if he starts to spend a lot of time in there I may give him some straw to lay in during the day.

And yes I had a busy 6 days off,, flat out 8-9 hr days lol, took 1 day off and hit the water with momma and put a couple eyes in the boat we had for supper. Was at work for 3 weeks home for 6 days now back in today for 2 weeks then hopefully ( I hold my breath when I say it ) we will be on our 2 & 2 for a spell. Oh well better to be busier than not busy at all I guess.

I really like how you built that with the overhang, gonna adopt that idea if you don't mind.  Only thing I'd have to change is building it a bit larger so that two dogs can hang out in there.  A good buddy of mine bought the house next door to us and they also have a lab.  A couple weeks ago we kicked down a couple boards in the fence so they could run around together as they were destroying the grass along the fences running back and forth barking at each other.  It's worked really good so far and probably wouldn't be a bad idea to build a big doghouse both can hang out in and keep watch during the night.  The neighbours dog is a pretty good watch dog and it's starting to catch on with ours.
