New Edmonton Cabela's Sneak Peek
« on: August 03, 2011, 06:20:07 PM »
I got to take a sneak peek at the new Edmonton Cabela's store today with my buddy Dave.  I was very impressed at the selection and staff knowledge in the store.  The prices were good in my opinionm and I found tons of stuff that I have never seen for sale in these parts before.  The pike are going to see lots of hooks they have never seen before up here now.  They have hot pecans, cashew's and almonds, and man are they ever addictive!  Stay away from the fudge counter too...  The mounts looked great including the Chip Lake non typical world record mule deer replica.  The fish mounts looked great too!  It is definately worth the trip!

I got there today as well.  My report is not as nice as yours Chris but I am glad I stopped in.  Lots of staff that were very friendly.  Prices for the most part stunk to high heaven.  I only saw a few decent prices.  I didn't check out the fishing and know nothing about prices.  Chris says they are good so I will take his word.  I actually am very dissapointed in most of the prices I saw.  Some of it was more than wholesale sports even.
The part I did like is that they have alot of stuff and especially bullets and guns in stock.  Great selection of things in there.  I wish they had more clothing as well.  It was a great turnout as well.  Very crowded.  They had almost every knife known to man in there as well in the knife section.

I also checked it out yesterday after work, and man that place was a ZOO!!  I was on a bit of a mission so I only really checked out the fishing stuff.  Lots of the same stuff you see everywhere else, but a little more variety as well - especially since they have their in house brand stuff.  I did pick up a big kickass Cabela's tackle bag while I was in there.  Prices that I saw were rather "meh" though.  One thing in particular I noticed was that a reel I have (Shimano Corvalus) was $30 more than anywhere else in town - and it's a discontinued model now!

I'll go back in a week or two and check the place out again and take a better look around when the crowds aren't so bad.

Oh, and no issues paying with debit when I was there - I read on that other forum that they were having some issues with their electronic payment thingy.
Just puttin' it out there...

Is the selection in the store different than their online  choices. What I am referring to is the fact they have no Canadian products in their online store. Specifically fishing gear. They offer no Scotty products, no Islander Reels. Heck they don't even offer any mooching reels. Just all Yank stuff. Personally I will not support any store that does not support Canadian products.

If I'm not mistaken all telephone or online orders come straight out of the states, none out of Canada.  Least thats the way it was about a yr ago.

So would that mean they don't sell Cdn. made products in their US stores?

Price rules for me.  I am cheap and will buy at the cheapest place like most people.  I was very dissapointed in the Waterfowl prices.  Pro grade GHG decoys for Geese were $220.  I buy the FFD upgraded version and get them for $179.  Even with Duty and shipping they are still cheaper to order from the U.S.  Even my Coffin blinds were way more expensive here.  Got to love the bullet selection in there though.  Finally someone will a great selection

I've been at the West Virginia store here a couple of times in the last 2 weeks and it is just another glamourized big box store. They do have a "whitetail world" exhibit which is pretty cool, but other than that, nothing special. Prices aren't even that great down here. Thought I would pick up a good pair of hiking boots while I'm down here, but Cabelas doesn't carry much above low grade boots. Better selection at Gander Mountain. I priced out a pair of Danners here, checked wholesales website, and they were the same price. Kinda disapointing really. Cabelas will be no different than bass pro, the novelty will wear off quickly

That about sums it up, Bass Pro is much of the same. Had some friends who drove up today and the report I got was much of the same.

I can buy better products online for cheaper than both stores I mentioned.

Popped in to the store yesterday. Wasnt all that impressed. There were a few nice mounts and was nice to see some local ones there, and a couple cranker rams that made the day worthwhile. But as far as anything I was looking at buying they either didnt carry it or the price was higher than I can buy it a other stores or online. Probably wont get many of my dollars.
