Perks of the job
« on: December 19, 2016, 07:57:15 PM »
Had a few miles to put on today and in my travels came across a lynx.  See them the odd time but generally later in the winter.  I snapped a picture of it and watched it for a bit milling around in the bush.
I whistled at it and it came darting my way looking a bit alarmed and then swerved out in front of the truck to be met by a couple little fur balls. Turns out it just misplaced a couple youngsters for a second.

Now that is a perk, a lot of people will go through their lives and never see that. Thanks for the picture.

If I knew how to post a video on here I would post a video I took of myself when I found a lynx walking a oil lease road.  I drove right beside it as it walked slowly beside my truck.  I was literally right beside it for 20 seconds or so.

Than I parked the truck and walked up to it.  Got within 5 feet before it trotted off

I put it on youtube.

I don't like knowing that people know who I am on line so I'll leave it up here for about a day

Cool stuff.

I have seen 2 live ones and one that died on a cut line. Hunters I talked to the next day said they seen it alive the day before and it was very skinny. Acting like a house cat coming right up to them on their quads. There was something wrong with it for sure.

Thanks for showing and describing the behavioral activities of these kitties.

They appear to be doing ok with human activities around them and changes in their ecosystem.

You see, logging old forests is good. ;)

I used to operate down the elk River road area and would see them on almost a weekly basis in the winter on or near roads.
Very cool animals.
I sure wish we could get a tag for one even if it was only a once in a lifetime thing.

Pretty sure a guy could buy one from a trapper if he wanted to. I was up in my tree stand last fall on our place and to my surprise a nice size one came trotting by me. It was nice to see on our place. As much as I would like one for my collection I'm not sure ide take that one, they're nice to have around.

They are getting more plentiful. I grew up in the bush as the son of a logger and I never saw a lynx until I was a adult. They were just about trapped to extinction in this part of the country back in the 70's. They could get up to $1200 for a nice pelt, there were trappers up here that went after nothing but. Could you imagine getting 20 or 30 lynx at $1000 a piece back in the early 70's that was big dollars. But they are definitely making a good come back as I now see them fairly regularly when out and about.
