Power Surges / outages?
« on: December 18, 2014, 08:18:33 PM »
I'm I the only one that has trouble with appliances and such when the power either flickers on and off, or on a planned outage when they Tripp the switch to turn it back on?
So far a couple coffee makers, 1 fancy ( pos) toaster, the main circuit board for a 2004 whirl pool stove( 300$). And tonight the fan on my less then one year old high efficieny boiler. I see the Gfi for the master bedroom was also tripped. And the wife said the clock on the new stove was off for quite sometime after the flicker .
Not to mention the solar eye on the yard light done twice in 10 yrs. always after a power failure.
So I'm lucky as we have back up heat, but no hot water as the boiler hits the indirect tank.  A closer look at that tank makes me think of rigging up some sort of emergency back up for hot water.

Quality controls on appliances today just aren't what they use to be.  Many are built to meet minimum requirements and cant survive the outages and power surges, all things that would negate warranty I am sure.

I have never had this issue. There is a lot of new acreages going up I our area and the power is constantly being shut down and fired up again and we have never had an issue with it wrecking any of our appliances.

Well I talked to a journey man linesmen, he figured our transformer is getting weak, as it should take the brunt of any surges. ATCO is more or less useless. They won't do anything about it unless the transformer fails completely bunch of lowlife s ( upper management) .  Not to get ripped on I know the guys climbing poles in -30 aren't the problem.  I've likley paid in line fees over the years for 10 transformers .
Good news is the guys we got the boiler from went above and beyond. He found the part needed at a wholesaler , called me up and said he could meet me 1/2 way or so from Edmonton . So he started driving east and I started west and we met just outside of Veg.  He said it wasn't warranty because of the short caused by external sources and the part was $400  , so his company covered the cost. I said I'd pay him or at least pay half he wouldn't hear of it says he has installed 100's of these boilers and this was the first time he's seen this.

Electrician is installing a surge protector today, another 250+ labour... But a surge last night fried the boiler  fan circuit board shorted again... The call to my boiler guy wasn't as joviall as the first time around, so 400$ out of my pocket and can't install until the surge protector is in.  I thought the first time it was just a freak but nope.

Gee whiz man you would think that with a profesional oipnion on the matter that Atco would do something.. I would take this someplace and hold Atco resposable for some of this.. That's BS.
