Really, 30 years ago you could get them for a song and jig outside the local waterhole. Your right Axe, mine is on the market for 8 Gs. also.

Bought a full wood Longbranch (not a sniper) back in 1969 for $29.95 at the local Cantire and they had surplus ammo in 5 gallon pails for 10 cents a round.
Nowadays you can't even find surplus .303 brit.

A Newfie went hunting one day in Ontario and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home when he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn’t like Newfies.

The game warden ordered the Newfie to show his hunting license, and the Newfie pulled out a valid Ontario hunting license.

The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its ass, and said, “This duck ain’t from Ontario. This is a Quebec duck. You got a Quebec huntin’ license, boy?” The Newfie reached into his wallet and produced a Quebec hunting license.

The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its ass, and said, “This ain’t no Quebec duck. This duck’s from Manitoba . You got a Manitoba license?” The Newfie reached into wallet and produced a Manitoba hunting license.

The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its ass, and said,

“This ain’t no Manitoba duck. This here duck’s from Nova Scotia . You got a Nova Scotia huntin’ license?” Again the Newfie reached into his wallet and brought out a Nova Scotia hunting license.

The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the Newfie,

“Just where the hell are you from?”

The Newfie turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said,

“You tell me, you’re the expert.”

I swear, a love of turnips must be genetic.  Have a homemade ham in the oven with wife's to die for scalloped potatoes and a pot of turnips boiling.  The smell of turnips boiling............

I just love turnips:  cut'em thin, boil, mash with some brown sugar, a little pepper and butter, picture me as homer simpson drooling.

(not entirely certain if my centuries old heritage is ukrainian, polish or russian, aunt who did the research only found graves in ukraine, but was always told we were polish.....until a couple centuries ago at least....family's been in N. Am. before there were country's here (wonder how many more century's before we're considered Canadian by the libs???  but I digress....))

My favourite way to eat Turnip is raw. slice peices like an apple and salt and eat. Buy them often at the grocery store and I eat them raw.

So I started a project this spring something I've been planning for years now. It's been a dream of mine for the last 25 years to build some engines and then do some rebuilds on older trucks or cars and drive them for a while then put them up for sale. Finally got my shop to the point where I felt it was time start. Been researching and reading and watching a lot of video over the last couple years and escpcialy the last few months there's a lot of good information out there this day and age sure makes it easy for a beginner.

This winter I searched and found the block I wanted, 350 SBC, 4 bolt main. Brought it home stripped it, took it into the city and had the block inspected, bored .030 over, line honed, and deck checked. Brought it home did a final cleaning, went through every nook and cranny on that block, cleaned up some sloppy burring it had from casting and readied it for paint and build.

I'm building the engine to around 410-420 HP been dealing with the boys and at Pro Stock in the city, great guy's a wealth of knowledge they have. Randy set me up with a really nice engine package he knows exactly what a guy needs for any givern HP all top of the line products. I'm going to be doing it in stages just to help spread out the cost some it's not cheap, the engine alone will be in the 7 - 8 grand mark by the time I'm done. I purchased and have installed the rotating assembly, cam and  timing gears. Will let it sit here for a while until later summer maybe and then go ahead and do the top end.

Went with Scat 9000 series crank, Kieth Black coated flat top pistons, full floating pins with Moly rings. Comp Cam with .477 lift Going to be going with PW aluminum heads with 64cc chambers, 2.01 / 1.94 valves, 200cc intake runners topped off with Edelbrock Air Gap RPM manifold topped with a 750cm carb. Will Finnish the engine off with all polished aluminum serpentine pullies and accessories.

I will be putting this engine into a 1974-1980 GMC short box 4x4 with manual transmission. Not a mudder truck at all will probly never see 4 wheel drive it's just going to be an afternoon up town driver. Nothing to big and crazy, maybe a 4" lift with 31" tires some mods nothing to outlandish just a nice clean truck. Plan on having this machine in Canary yellow with black accents as the engine will be done to match.

That will be a nice project Walleyes, keep the pictures coming as you build. Always neat to see start to end on these things. Back in 78 I did up a 1972 Chevy PU, then a tree jump out in front of me and took it from me. Man I loved that truck.

Should be a good motor.  That's more or less what we used to run in streetstocks.  (with lesser quality parts(mostly make 2 or 3 motors into one, and much more cam)

Only advice mic the crank and rods so you know your clearance.  Never trust the machine shop, check things yourself.  That, and don't cheap out on valvesprings.  Used to get ours from the dodge dealer in S'toon;  they sell anything speedway sells, forget the brand, but reasonable and great stock pocket springs, WAAAy stronger and longer lasting than, "z28 springs"  (If I remember the brand I'll post)

(stockcars used to run way more rod bearing clearance, hv pump with hp spring but were asking way more rpm of those poor old parts than they were ever designed for)

Thx guys.

No I don't have the truck yet, having a bit of a time finding the right one. It has to be a GMC for one thing not a Chev ,, (I don't drive jobbers)  as well as a 4 speed. May end up doing some swaps from a couple different units we will see. Dont want a rust bucket, doesn't matter for the running gear can do a swap from a 2 wheel drive even of the body is right.

You bet Bruce, used plastigauge on all mains and connecting rods everything is in spec. End play was a little tight at .004 but still in spec just at the tight end of the scale, same as mains, they were in spec but at the tight end. Connecting rods came in right in the middle and ring gap was bang on at .020. These are the heads I'm going with they come complete they are good heads quite a few of them out there and guy's are having good luck with them.

Like I said no rush it's  a long term thing, may take up to 3 years we will see. Will probly have the engine ready for a dyno run this winter, late fall maybe then I will get serous on looking for the right unit to get it in.
