A man in Alberta wakes up one morning to find a bear on his roof. So he looks in the yellow pages and sure enough..there's an ad for "Alberta Bear Removers."
He calls the number and the man says he'll be over in 30 minutes.
The bear remover arrives and gets out of his van. He's got a ladder, a baseball bat, 12-gauge shotgun, and a mean heavily scarred old pit bull.

"What are you going to do?" the homeowner asks.

"I'm going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I'm going to go up there and I’ll knock the bear off the roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls
off the roof, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van."

He then hands the shotgun to the homeowner.

"What's the shotgun for?" asks the homeowner.

"If the bear knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog. :o

Got Cows.....LOL
I was born and raised on the farm moved away for many years and just moved back home about 3 years ago. I have thought for many years and especially since I moved back home that I would like to own some cows. Investments have sort of sucked so I made a deal with the BIL and went to the auction last week and started my "herd". Bought 6 Angus bred heifers 3 red and 3 black hope to get up to about 15 in a couple of years. I am thinking it will be a great supplement for the retirement.

I've worked with quite a few guys over the years that have done or are doing the same as you. Nothing wrong with having a nice herd they can be a very solid form of secondary income.

What part of the country are you in, you said central looks like east central, maybe Two Hils kind of country ??

Great to see that you are using the capital investments that are already on the farm.

You also have the existing capital to set up other small profit making ventures.  I commend you for you ingenuity

Investments in the stock market for normal middle class people are a joke these days. One usually ends up losing or breaking even, after you pay the brokerage costs.

I moved away in 74, oil was just getting started. The 80's and ever since have been pretty busy (maybe not the last couple years).

We know that Walleyes. Is the night shift  pretty busy or do you have time to have a couple of coffees and peruse the boat parts catalogues?

It sounds like the weather in the land of the mighty Peace is sort of crappy right now.

Take Care. :)

Lol, thx grey.

Just doing th big switch over today, we work a 24hr shift on our switch over days, got on shift yesterday at 16:30hrs will get off today at 16:30 then I'm on my 10 days of day shift.

No nights are pretty casual out here. Unless there's issues of course or we are doing a cement job then it's a busy night. Most nights are spent on the computers doing books for a couple hours other than that it's pretty much just keep an eye on stuff. Phone is quiet, pretty much just cruise the interweb looking at boat and hunting stuff lol.

The wife and I were texting tonight (I’m at work ) she tells me Gunner was growling and alert. We figured coyotes but she says she doesn’t worry cause he’s on guard and ready. Lol I would say so here he is while momma is at the dinning room table doing some books. I’d like to see some loser come in through the door and try and lay a hand on her lol, be worst mistake of their life.

He’s turned into an amazing guard dog everything we wanted, gentle with the grandkids and the wife, loyal as can be, does not leave the property. but man when strangers drive in the yard that dog changes personalities so fast, he can not stand it, he grows about 4” and his chest puffs out he gets right upset,  let alone when they try and exit their vehicle, very few people will get out. We reward him for his efforts we wouldn’t change a thing.

When I’m at home he doesn’t like to be in the shop with me because he can’t see the house, he’ll sit outside in front of the garage so he can keep an eye on both buildings but he will not leave momma unguarded.

Here he is on guard with momma, she is seated on the chair he is up against lol.

Boy we must have brothers mutts. Even looks like mine. Hates people coming into his yard, won’t let anybody out of the vehicle neither. He will come off when we call though, and if we accept people in our place then he is ok. Best dog for our little farm, and protector of his family.

With gunner it pretty much takes us to start having a conversation or shake hands with strangers until he trusts them, then he’s pretty cool. But he does have that sense though. This fall when I sold an old ski doo on infomall I was at work and the guys came to pick it up. He did not like them one bit, nothing momma could do to get him to lay off, she had to put him in the shop he did not trust them. There were 3 of them in an older beat up truck and he sensed something on them boys he didn’t like.

He’s a Lab/ Shepard cross what’s yours lever.

Lab/collie,  funniest thing I seen was when the cops pulled in one day. There were looking for a neighbors place, well the dog held his ground as he always does until I went out. I called  him off and went to talk with the cops thinking I was going to hear a lecture about no signs up, or a viscous dog speel. They told me if every country home had a dog like mine their job would be easy out here. ( I have never had a problem at my place) Glad to talk with a few cops that still had a bit of common sense. When we take him on horse trips we have no problems with him around people at all, he’s not a in your face pet me kind of dog, but isn’t mean neither.

Hello Everyone,
Haven't been here for awhile.  Moved to Sk to help son start farming.  Starting a farm from scratch, first yr in a 14' trailer, thin budget, old equipment, it's been an adventure but great to be able to work with son.  Things are getting under control now and son's the boss, wife and I are now just unpaid farm labor, and we're just fine with that.  :)
I like SK, but if you're used to S. AB it's COLD here.  Winter -50 is common.  Summers morn and eve you'll want a hoodie.
Haven't had a chance to fish the local lakes yet, hope this yr.  Draw system here sucks Bigtime, but at least WT and bird licences are over the counter.  Same as AB if you want to go N you can hunt every year.  Hope if time this summer to take a drive and check out some Zones.
WT are Everywhere, MD in the valley's, grouse/partridge in our yard, geese are a darn road hazard in spring but few come opening day.   Moose around like S. AB, elk in valleys but Indians hit them Hard, see elk once/yr is about all.  Bear around but not enough for my liking.  Son's seeding some oats this yr so we'll see.  ;)
Always WT in our yard, wife had been htg sons hay 1/4 hard, had a REal nice buck patterned but just hadn't had a shot.  Got a cold snap, wife said to heck with it for the day, I decided to just take a walk N of the yard(parkland, it's good everywhere).  Heading down the hall to put my boots on, happen to look out the office window;  laughed, called wife, never seen her move so fast.  This guy was browsing about 30' from the house.  Note the jammie pants.  Our first SK WT

Right on Bruce good to hear from you. Starting farming from scratch, theres a brave boy lol. Hope the best to him, it’ll be a nice lifestyle I’m sure.

Lots of good moose in the North and north east of the province east and north of PA if you ever get the chance.

Hope you keep in touch a little more and keep us up to date on the progress of the farm.
