Seeking boat knowledge
« on: March 18, 2016, 08:34:51 PM »
Hi guys I recently started looking for our first used fairly low budget ($5000 tops hopefully half that) boat and have very little knowledge on what to really be looking for or avoiding especially when it come to hands on inspection time other then the glaringly obvious visual things.
I don't wanna end up with a worthless p.O.s due to ignorance.
Any tips or hints on less obvious things to be aware of and looking at?
Or better yet if by some slim chance anyone in the Edmonton area would be willing to come with for one inspection to give me the rundown and earn themselves a all expenses paid albeit local ish fishing trip or 2.lol
Also if you have or know of a half decent older16ft +/- a foot suitable fishing boat feel free to let me know.
Not hung up on any certain style open to everything from aluminum fishing boats to fiberglass motor boats or even inflatables just want a decent dependable boat you can safely stand in for fishing.
Thanks all

I don't want to discourage you off the hop hammer but in all honesty it's going to be tough to get into a decent reliable 16' for $5000 or under, it's hard to get into a 14' tinner that is reliable for that kind of money. Now there are boats out there for that price mostly older Fiberglass boats but your pushing the reliable part for that kind of cash.

One can usually tell a lot just by the over all looks of a boat, if the inside of the boat I'd rough and it's all scratched up chances are that boat wasn't looked after. Unless you know the boat I would stay away from older glass boats they can have rotten stringers and the glass can be all parted the stern all rotted out and it won't be noticeable to the eye they can be a real money pit.

Again I'm sorry here but if you want something reliable for the family and not have to worry your going to have to double your budget and get into a good solid tin boat. Atleast with tin you can see what your getting.

Look around see what you find and then bring the info back and we will have a look at it. I will help out as much as I can. Boats are a hobby of mine, I study them, read about them, watch the price of them quite regularly. I am in the early stages of getting into rebuilding older boats for resale but that is a couple years out yet.

I will keep you in mind while I am browsing boat sections over the next while.

Yes and no. There is the usual old stuff out there but anything newer is too high priced. One would think with the way things are that there would be some good deals out there but there aren't too may. The problem is is most everybody owes too much on their toys. They all bought at an over enflated price with no money down and got sucked into the 20 years at $200 a month and loaded the yard with toys. So 3 or 5 years later they still owe a bunch on it and they can't afford to sell it cheaper they owe more than what it's worth. So there's lots out there just not many good deals. Wait until summer and keep an eye on the repo auctions when the banks start selling the stuff, that's where the deals are going to be. Not many will have the cash to even go,, low turn out equals no bids.

Here's a good fishing boat. Naden is a decent boat under evaluated boats they are. Motor looks lightly used, outside doesn't appear to be damaged. It may be worth your look. Little smaller than what you planned on but 14' is a good fishing boat. My father And brother and I fished the ocean around Camble River and Port McNeil for years in a 14' with a 20hp kicker.

What do you think about misty river boats?
Found a mid 90's 16ft with a 2004 9.9h.p Suzuki 4 stroke
And decent trailer with new tires.
Buddy's asking $3800

Misty's are decent boats, a little on the light side but they are well made. Only thing is a 9.9 is wayyyy under powered for a 16' you won't like it trust me. You want 20 min on a 16.

Walleyes is right,a 9.9 is way to small for a 16 footer. The last thing you want to do is get caught out in a storm with a small motor like that.. :o

Good call on the 9.9
I found a marine surveyor in Edmonton that will do a boat inspection for $150 so I think going that route would be a good investment and save a lot of potential grief.
Not to mention if the seller is not up for it I know to run.
Already got a couple of non replies once mentioned and one guy who would not do it.
Lots of D bags out there on kijiji
