Shorland'r boat trailers :(
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:12:55 AM »
Just made it back from our Ontario fishing trip.
And will post more about it with some pics in the near future.
But in case anyone was considering buying a shorland'r trailer I feel it's urgent to get this out to hopefully prevent others from suffering the same fate as us.
So I purchased a brand new shorland'r boat trailer a few weeks ago largely due to our impending trip and wanting it to be as trouble free as possible.
So we had some pretty stiff cross winds coming back through Western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan but just putted along in the slow lane at 85-90 kms/hr in the old motorhome.
We pull over to fuel up shortly after we enter sask (thank god we did) and could not believe my eyes...at the winch post area the trailer tounge had bent sideways and cracked rendering the trailer unsafe to continue traveling.
It was Sunday of course and had no way to contact the dealer or manufacturer so we patiently waited until Monday morning to get the ball rolling, disapointed but optimistic that we would recieve help from the dealer and manufacturer after informing them about a potentially deadly flaw in there product.
Long story short shorland'r claims we where in a collision and the dealer was willing to sell me a new tounge at cost?
After recommending we splint it together with 2x4's and drive it the 9 hrs or so to Edmonton like that!
Thanks for F ALL shorland'r and recreational power sports.

On the bright side we found a wonderfull welder at a farm repair place that had us on the road in less then three hrs after talking to him.
Have to appreciate the irony of how our '76 motorhome made it trouble free but our brand new shorland'r boat trailer had a almost catastrophic failure that could of caused a fatality and shorland'r does not care.

Well that's just plain crappy luck Hammer. :(

I bought a new small shorland'r trailer years ago and no problems for the two years that I had it.

I just hope the weld job doesn't void your warranty. :(

O I'm sure it probably will but no matter what good is a warranty that won't cover a major structural fail anyways.
I'm sure a p.o.s scab outfit like shorland'r would just deny any warranty issues whatever they may be even without the weld job after this experience with them. But great trip regardless.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck hammer. Part of the problem with US built trailers is they don't have to have a National Safety Mark so when they send their junk up here there is no accountability. If they were a Canadian company you would have recourse with transport Canada. As a Canadian trailer manufsxturer I am fully responsible for anything we put on the road and we do our due diligence because if someone gets killed our company is liable. Another issue with the trailer industry is its an industry where these manufacturers try and be as cheap as possible. I could build you a boat trailer but it's going to be double the price. Why, because it's properly built, properly painted, and it's built by a journeyman welder, not a $10 hr Mexican. All our designs are reviewed by an engineer as well. So unless guys wants something really custom I tell them to go to a trailer lot and buy something because I can't do it for the same price as Big Tex or DCT. Lots of our customers are guys who have owned 3 or 4 trailers and are tired of junk. I would still tell you to document and report the issue to Transport Canada if you want a contact there let me know.
