The Future of Alberta Sportsman Forum
« on: August 07, 2019, 12:02:24 PM »
Hello folks. I have kept this site up for a long time now, and have not been very active the past couple years. A lot of discussion and interaction has moved to social media and web forums are slowly becoming a thing of the past. That being said I know there are lots of guys that don't have Facebook and appreciate this sort of environment to interact. The hosting space I have for the site is on a virtual dedicated server, it takes up a fair bit of my space allocation and costs about $720 a year to run. This is space that I need for new projects that I am working on. So I am going to suggest if someone wants to take this over I will work to move it to cheap hosting like a godaddy account which will run about 10 bucks per month plus the annual domain registration of say 20 bucks a year. So anyone want to take this over? Sorry in advance folks.

Hi Paul:

As much as I hate to say this I have to start using Facebook and Twitter. I have avoided F and T as much as possible for obvious reasons.

Time for me to update with the real world. No use for you to be losing money. You are not fed by taxpayers like other sites.

Thank you  for letting me on with my conservative views. I do not think those views are too different from regular hard working Alberta folks.

do word insertion.

Let me talk this one over with the wife Paul, I’m on a trip right now but I’ll be home in a couple days.

If someone wants to help with the tech end I don’t see why it can’t be done.

What do you guys think do we want to save the site, let me know.

I would kick in for the Domain registration and continue to help out if Walleyes was boss man.

I am surprised to this day that we are still a very small group.  Like Paul said, maybe web forums are a thing of the past.
Facebook is just such a horrible interface though and I hate it to this day, never mind the data mining by them and ultimately more censorship.
This place had some freedom and no overbearing moderation like other groups.  It would be nice to see it catch on more.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Ok let’s do it Axe.

But I’m not a tech guy at all so I think it would be much better if you did the tech stuff, but we can see how it goes.

The cost doesn’t bother me either what ever works.

It would be nice if the forum kept on going but we need more people to post or else I thing it will fail.

Yes we can work on that sonny, getting the name out there more, we will see how it goes.

I can use it as a business expense I will just run my business name as an advertisement on the bottom and it’s all legal.

Hi guys ....I have been  fairly unwell for a while now ..on the mend though.
I wouldn't like this page to close.
I agree with everything said here   Especially about Facebook .
I will be keeping track of this subject and am very Pro Outdoorsman .
I like Pauls idea of reducing costs.
I'm sure the fine brains on here will be able to solve any dilemmas .
     Thanks

I would pay a membership fee or donate to operating costs to keep this site going. Not very skilled with computer things so no help there lol.

Is advertising money an option?

Thanks Sooner.

 I'm on Facebook , 30 different pages , mostly Birddog ,
Fishing , some anti liberal pages ...
I'm managing half a golf course in Okotoks , I hired
numerous retired senior males on FB , their wives
responded to the add for them ....lol.

If we the forum from hell exes , want to survive ....
We need lower priced server as Paul indicated ,
More advertising , even An add on FB .
FB is anti Gun , anti hunting dog , PETA aligned .
And most of the BS on there you won't use ..
And most importantly ....I HAVE ENOUGH FRIENDS ...
Reduce the category's , think outside the box when it comes
Hunting fishing accessories ....Add Dogs , Marine , isolate
Shotgunnning , big game .....make it more user friendly ...
Work on Advertising and affiliations Ie...ACA ....be the
      home for Delta Waterfowl ..
I know we have people on here who are Tech Savvy .
When I'm finished at the GC ...Oct 1 ...lm done working
I know most people on here are in the North ....but I'm willing
       to help ...
Grey....you know how I feel about being sold down the river
by those commie boot lickers .....

So this is perplexing , there is a Alberta Sportsman Face book
Page ....no one I recognise from 2013 ....???

I would definitely chip in on costs to help things out forsure. Especially if we could share photos easier. I have tried so many times to post & include photos which never go my way & I end up deleting the thread.

It would be sad to see it go.
I refuse to involve myself with Facebook and such and those jabronie's at the other  site have forever lost my respect.
Currently I am in no position to contribute monetarily (but did just accept a lead operator position in balmy fox Vegas:) so that will change shortly)and I have the tech knowledge of a chimp so of little help in that department.
But I will try to recruite new members however.

I’m not sure why you are having problems Snap this site has one of the easiest formats to post pics. What happens when you just try and drop in a photo using the Attachments and other options option. You should be able to drop a photo in. If the format is to large on the photo you may have to shrink the photo. What I do sometimes is I’ll send the photo to my phone or device once this usually shrinks it or sometimes it helps to just edit the photo some, just shrink the size of it some in your photo edit options.

Maybe Axe can help some more.

I think that Walleyes has the answer.  It is likely the file size that is giving grief.  Be aware of the restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 6000KB, maximum individual size 2000KB
Many pics from a cell phone or camera are natively above the 2000KB size.
I use a free app called "Irfanview" to resize them before posting.  Just google and download it.
If you resize to 1920x1080 and save as jpg with has compression, most pics will be much below that size limit.
You also have the option of using an image link and a picture hosting site like Imgur.

Also Panda, I use this site to resize. Very simple for guys like us ( me) that don’t compute well.
