tow hooks
« on: December 29, 2016, 01:39:08 PM »
Over the holidays I was at the crowsnestpass and headed for the Allison cross country ski trails not that I could ski there as they do not allow dogs but to just see what is up. I found a Subaru stuck on top of a big snow drift.  No problem I thought i would just hook a chain on him and pull him out. There were no tow hooks and nowhere to hook a chain.  Luckily a fellow from the fish hatchery showed up and we were able to dig him out with shovels.  Since then I talked to a guy who saw a jeep patriot stuck in the Ghost River and the same problem with no tow hooks.  I would suggest for guys that have a little suv with no tow hooks to have a trailer hitch put on the back so someone could pull you out if stuck.

Yep most small SUV and cars have nothing. I drive a F450 and can usually help most people on the back roads, but I won't touch nothing without tow hooks, I would end up pulling half the car apart. You would think the SUV would at least have them on.

According to AMA man I talked to last week the Subraru and other Toyota products have little tow hooks back in from the rear bumper.  Some of the smaller cars do not have anything up front for towing.

Not good.

Bought the wife a new Terrain this summer and had a hitch put on it right off the hop. I have her pack a receiver and a 50' tow strap at all times, along with extra gloves, touque, and heavy socks and winter boots on long trips. Common sense in this country one would think.

I make up a kit that my wife and girls keep in their vehicles. Same thing ski-doo top and pants, warm cloves and hat, then just a few G-bars and such. Every truck has recovery strap, booster cables, snow shovel , first aid kit, snow bush and flairs.  Sometimes people laugh at me about this and I don't get it, they say it's not needed anymore because they have their cell phone with them, I had no idea all that fit in a cell phone. :-\. Think I'll just stay old school and keep the bag in the trucks, to much farm boy in me I guess.

We(wife, son, daughter, grand daughter & I)all pack the same stuff.  We must have grown up as neighbours!!! ;)  I also get laughed at, but as my father used to say:"Better to have it & not need it, than need it and not have it."  Sage advice that I have passed on.  Each of us also have a metal can with a roll of tp in it and a bottle of isopropanol in case we require some heat in the vehicle, rather than continually running the engine(CO hazard).  I pack a set of chains(4) year around for the really crappy situations.
