Workin On The Honey Do List.
« on: June 01, 2017, 08:36:00 PM »
After a couple years of requests from my wife I finally did her a biggy. Finally fenced off the garden area. She said she wasn't going to plant this year if I didn't as the deer usually hit us pretty hard especially last year lol, darn near cleaned us out of lettuce and carrot tops. So it's done, also made it big enough for us to put in a small fruit tree area. We have 2 apple tress and 2 cherry trees out in th yard but the deer hit them pretty good. Going forward we will plant the fruit trees in the fence. Wasn't too bad, got it done in 2 days, rented a pounder from the county for the posts, got the posts and top rails done first day, wire and gates day 2. Have a 46" man gate and a 8' tractor gate on the back end.

PS. Can't wait get back to work and relax for a while sheeesh lol.

Very nice ! Several points there ...I am in a constant
deer war as well . Motion sprinklers , Irish spring soap
All the city deer stuff .
How tall is that fence , our Mulies clear the 5.5 stuff
no problem ... Again nice job .

Nice setup walleyes. I love those straight posts.

I never knew county's rented post hole pounders.

Have you also considered putting a little doghouse just on the edge of garden? With a dog that sleeps in the little doghouse at night?  I was thinking that might work for me.

This year we are also placing bags of human hair tied to the fence and buried on the edges of  the garden. Hope it works keeping the deer away. Survey tape tied to the fence wire does not seem to keep the mulies away.

We are also having problems with rabbits and young fruit trees.  I think some tin around the base of the trees might work.  I also might have to try the "Speckle"  ;) :) method of rabbit management.

Walleyes. Do you have any other ideas to keep the deer and rabbits out of the garden?

Thanks for the post Walleyes.

Thx boys.

The fence is about 55" average in height plenty for whitetail as they aren't all that hungry really to bother to jump it. Mules in your country yah I could see it. As far as Rabbits and the like really all a guy can do is fence, they do make smaller sized squares for page wire that would work for rabbits. As far as the height goes for Muleys, how about pushing in some treated 4 x 4's leaving then 8' high, you can get wire 8' I believe, that's what we put at our sons a couple years back.

Here is what I know ...

3 strands of wire going around the perimeter above
The existing fence , with ribbon , or fluorescent survey
Tape tied to the wire .....no deer will jump this and it's
    Maintanance free.
For single plants or beds ......I buy Irish Spring  original
hand soap bars , cut the bars in four , make little bags
with plastic netting ( like vegetables come in ) or burlap
With a quarter bar in the bag ....just hang it on the tree
Or on a stake in the bed... No deer will go near this stuff .
          May work for rabbits .

My late Father Inlaw tried just about everything over the years, the soap, human hair thing in the end the deer got used to it all and eventually crossed it. In the end he resorted to the old faithful, gun powder  ;)
