Not sure if it is a good thing that we are served only by BassPro. There are a few independent gun stores around, but for one stop shopping, it looks like we are running out of choices.

That's too bad I liked WSS, did my best to support them over the yanky stores. Another Canadian company going down. Oh well that's the way it works.

I didn't mind them too much and they were close to me.

That's a shame.

Lots of times on my commute I'd stop in to the one on St. Albert trail as it was easy to get to and wasn't that far off my route. :(

That's unfortunate, haven't purchased anything there in a good long while but used to get some un real deals on shotgun shells by the case if you timed it right but that was before online purchasing.  Had a friend going to school in Calgary and he'd check out the deals and when something good came up we'd make a trip.

These days I do probably 80% of my shopping online and it's saved a pile of money in gas and insane pricing of the local shop.   I've always included wholesale in my searches but honestly for one reason or another I don't recall a time where I've ended up ordering through them.  Not saying they are a bad store at all but just from my viewpoint it kinda makes sense looking at recent experience, maybe there are a lot of folks seeing the same thing and such a large part of consumer sales is online now.

Actually thinking back my first baitcaster came from wholesale.  I think I was 11 or 12.  Grandpa made me a deal that he'd get me a new rod and reel if I mowed his yard all summer.  Ended up ordering a Browning reel paired with a Medium Heavy Bob Izumi edition Shimano.  Still have it in the basement, broken tip via bike spokes and all ha.  Browning was a bit of an oddball for a reel but it was the only one in that old magazine that was reasonably priced and had a left hand retrieve.  I still don't understand why folks will reel a spinning reel with their left hand and then have a right handed baitcaster.

Anyways that's enough rambling, crappy to see them closing, another victim of an ever tightening market.

I supported them some, sorry to see them go. Only one box store in town is not a good thing, lots of people out of work too.

I think we all saw WSS going downhill in 2008 after the U.F.A. bought it, and applied a hardware store management model to operate a sporting goods business.

My question is what WSS is going to do with their massive inventory of sporting goods.

When the Regina store closed last Christmas the remaining inventory was sold at WSS south Edmonton for 75 percent off.

Anyways, Let's keep our eyes open.

They like the others, seemed to have it, if the other stores didn't. I wasn't a regular but bought stuff there from time to time, liked their sale prices when I needed something. I have a gift card so I guess i'm going to the liquidation sale.

Cabela's usually gets most of my purchases when i need to replace something or buy shells, never seem to find anything worth buying when I am in Calgary and hit Bass Pro. Great eye candy store but too expensive it seems.

Sad at the lack of options to shop at now. I miss the little shops like the Fishing Center. When they got into some hunting gear, it was a one stop shop for me and i could support the little guy.

Not only that but wss serviced some smaller centers like Leth.  Long way to Calgary for lot's of people.  Things like boots you don't order online.  The one in Regina closed this spring I believe.

Well guys I won't have hunting gear but for anyone that needs fishing gear I can promise you excellent service and will do my best with pricing, free shipping over $99 online order. We just relaunched the online store and are bringing in about 2200 new products rods, reels, electronics, lures, accessories, terminal tackle etc, our brick and mortar will be in Sylvan Lake.

Stopped into Cabala's south side Edmonton this afternoon.  The place was empty.

Went to WSS south side where guns were 5 percent off, and a few other items were 10 percent off. No good deals were to be had.   There sure were a lot of people in the store.  Not many at the check out counter.

Like I said in my previous post, I wonder how they are going to handle the sale of the large inventory.

I stop by just cause I wanted a new wool base layer anyway. Not to many deals yet in the shut down. But the icebreaker merino was 30% off so it work ok for me. It will take a month or so for the good deals to come if there is anything left by then. I don't need much so I won't make it point to get in, but will stop by again if I'm in the area.

I was in WSS about ten days ago looking for 28 gauge ammo.

The sign said 10% off all shotgun ammo... cool. :)

Yeah after the 10% off Federal #6 shot was still $26.99....screw that.. :(

Today I was in Cabelas (northside) and found the same ammo for $14.88.  ;)

No wonder WSS is going belly up. 8)

*edit*

They only had six boxes and I took them all. ;D

I was in there yesterday, walk around for about an hour (time to kill) could not find anything cheaper then Cabala's. I am told that the place is being run by a liquidation company, so no deals will be had until the end. There was a line up at the till though.

Keep in mind boys this company never went broke, they are owned by UFA no shortage of money there. UFA decided it wasn't worth it for the amount of input they had going into it. Thy may have hired liquidators to look after it or some of their own people. A lot of the left over inventory may go to some UFA stores as well like amo and clothing.
