Yukon Camping
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:00:52 PM »
Had a great time camping and exploring in the Yukon.  Camped light out of the Jeep.  Sleeping in the back was great with the system I set up.
We did the Cassiar highway and the Robert Campbell route through Ross River and Faro this time.
Lots of great fishing for grayling everywhere.  Just the wife and I went and we explored up the Nahanni Range Road too.  Some remote beautiful country for sure.

Pics are:

1. Camp at Frances Lake.
2. Pelly River and the start of the North Canol Road.
3. Lapie River on the Nahanni Range Road.
4. Bear Glacier near Stewart, BC.

I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

I was at Stewart a few years ago next time I go I will be taking more tires with me.  The guy that owns the tire shop in Stewart is from Medicine hat fixed me up for free! I could not get over the number of Americans that where up that way.  Never before have I seen so many black bears they are like gophers.

Did you have any tire trouble on the trip?

Jimmy,

In the last couple years there has been a lot of road improvement up that way on the Stewart-Cassiar #37 hi-way.  It is mostly all paved now.  No tire troubles.
I heard it was bad before as you experienced.  It is all good paved hi-way to Stewart now.  There is a bit of gravel up north by Dease Lake but not much.
The 65 kilometers from Meziadin Junction west to Stewart is quite a drive and very scenic.  It goes through Windy Pass where the Bear glacier comes right down to the road.
There is major avalanche hazard through that section.  You are right, bears are like gophers around there.

We had breakfast in Stewart in a really neat little restaurant called the Rookery.  It was very rustic and had a collection of cool antiques on display, very good atmosphere with great food.
Homemade bread for the toast and homemade strawberry jam.  I had a great wild BC mushroom omelette.  A couple of chickens walked in the door while we were eating....lol...looking for their eggs.

I was really impressed with Stewart and it was well worth the side trip in there.  I could see myself retiring there but the winter snow load is pretty daunting there.

Looks like some darn nice country axe,, scared to go there,, may never come back. Just the thought of all that open country and not a bone head sitting on every cutline and corner appeals to me.

How many miles did you log and how far up did you go.

We did a loop on the Robert Campbell hiway with a few side trips.  The route up was west to almost Terrace then up the Stuart/Cassier, Ross river and Faro, and back through Carmacks and Whitehorse, and then back down the Alaska hiway.  Long ways.  About 5100 kms I figure.
