Post by: wildman on October 20, 2013, 07:36:50 PM

looking for some lakes and the only leads i can find are these coordinates....

I've tried to figure it out, doesn't make any sense to me.  If you go on the IFISH site for alberta they usually have the lakes all marked on the google map for you.  Check it out. http://www.ifishalberta.com/lakes.php

Its actually pretty easy. Its just a big grid system. So from your example of 1-27-1-W5. That is

Section 1..........Township 27...........Range 1.........West of the 5th Meriadian.

A township has 36 sections, each section has 16 sub-divisions.

Townships increase south to north. Ranges increase east to west. Therefore Townships are Northings and Ranges are Eastings.

Once you hit a Meriadan Ranges start over again at 1. Townships never start over. The US border is Township 1.

The NWT border is Township 126.

Each Township is 6 miles by 6 miles.

Clear as mud yet? LOL

There are programs online to convert legal descriptions into ground UTM co-ordinates.

Here is a shot of the Alberta fishing regulations.

Se about the middle of the page there are grey numbers.  The ones up and down at the Township numbers and the ones east and west are the range numbers.  The grey squares on the map are the townships (6X6 miles as explained above).
