Big Pike Day

Wow, had an awesome day at one of my old favorite backwoods lakes in the Lac La Biche area yesterday. The big pike were non stop action all day and were really aggressive taking full size spoons tipped with a big smelt. Pike after pike up to 15 pounds were the order of the day. Ice conditions were great with 15-16 inches of good black ice with only a couple inches of snow on top. I think we were the only ones that have fished the lake since freeze up since we saw no other tracks or holes on the entire lake. I still can't believe we don't see more fishermen at some of these backwoods lakes as the fishing is incredible to say the least. I think the majority just keep following the crowds though.
Next on my list is a jumbo perch lake in the same general area that gets zero pressure. Hopefully the good conditions hold up for a bit.
Here are a couple that I took home:

Those are some good looking gators.
To bad they are so slimy and stink or I might chase them around a bit more.

Nice pike dude!
Good luck with the perch hole. I'm looking for a few new perch spots myself, as my go to lakes have winter killed over the last couple of years.
Cheers,
Mike.

Good stuff axe,, keep the little perch hole of yours under wraps,, there is enough pressure in that area,, if you have a quiet spot keep it very tight lipped or its gone in a matter of days..

Nice stuff AXE. I was wanting to get the kids out this week but was a little worried about the ice conditions. I like to keep the truck close so I can warm them up if I have to or put on a movie and 15" is not going to work for me with kids and a truck. I think I am going to have to wait another month to see if we get some colder weather.

Hey Nube most of the lakes 3 hours drive north of edmonton have 16 to 20 inches of good solid ice with the exception of cold lake.

Got a few more pics back today from my buddy Jesse's camera. I want to go back up there towards the end of March and see what is biting then and try a few more spots.
Here are a couple more pics of some of the Pike that I landed that day. We released a ton like these that day.

Where are the pis of the big ones!!
Nice fish Axe. I bet they were a lot of fun pulling them up through the ice. I had a day like that once at Heart lake when I was a young kid. Caught a pile of fish all 6-14 lbs non stop all day. It was a ton of fun.
