Christmas Ice Fishing.
« on: December 07, 2011, 09:02:06 AM »
I am sitting here chomping at the bit at work counting the days until our Christmas break anticipating the holidays and some of the fishing we have planned. For years it has been a tradition that on boxing day all the guys headed out to one of our favorite ice fishing lakes and spent the day out on the ice. The lake we went to for years is pretty much off road accessible only. You can make it in with a vehicle but most times at Christmas its still pretty dicey. Unfortunately the last 3 years with us living in this God forsaken south country my boys and I haven't made it out. We have been staying south for the holidays. Well this year thats done, we are heading up to Lac La Biche to spend Christmas with family. I am planning on taking up the quads and ice equipment and have plans on hitting the ice for at least a couple days. Needless to say I am pumped. The lake we head into produces some awesome walleye and perch through the ice. Not the dug out fish from the south but some true northern cold water fish hard like rocks and a beautiful golden green,, nothing like those northern fish.. Its the whole thing that is great. We take in a couple fry pans, some butter and mixed flour batter, fry up some fresh fish that is still flopping when you it them with the knife. Bring some left overs from the day before,, its just a great day out in the woods.

Damn I am having a hard time counting the days until we move back north,, I know one thing,, living in this south country has given me a new respect for the north.. Never again will I take it for granted the freedom of the north and all it has to offer.. Just a few more months..

So lets hear about any other ice fishing traditions you all might have..

Sounds like a good time, nothing like fresh fried perch right out of the water. My lady and myself spent New Years Eve on a lake last year, had the whole lake to ourselves after 10 oclock, and first fish of the year just a few minutes in. Might just have to do it again this year, maybe on a lake a little closer to home, the 2 hour drive after was a bit much. For me the stars, coyotes and quiet are a whole lot more appealing than a crowded room full of noisy drunks and stale smoke. Of course then I only get to kiss one lady at midnight, but that might be a good thing, keep me out of trouble.  ;)

Sounds like a fun way to spend boxing day, enjoy! We'll be heading South for X-Mass this year, going to the Hat.

Well we made it out just as planned and it was an awesome day. Weather was great hardly any snow for the quads so the trail in was a breeze and as usual the little lake didn't disappoint. Between 10 guys we landed between 30 - 40 walleye and a dozen humpy perch. Got enough eyes over 50 for a great shore lunch and a few for home as well. Yup it was the highlight of my holidays for sure..

The north man there is nothing like it.
