Cold Lake Outing.
« on: August 25, 2021, 02:57:32 PM »
Got out for some action on the big lake today. Spent the am 8 - 11 in the shallows 10 - 16’ trolling raps for Pike and walleye. Was rewarded with a couple awesome fish. Close to personal best walleye coming in at 80cm 12# and a nice pike in the 10# range.

Then went out to the deep fro some lakers. Got into a few but nothing special. They are pretty lazy coming up in that warm water. Pulled lined around 1230 and came in. But was a nice day out on the water with the Admiral.

Very nice fish, but it was that rail mounted BBQ that caught my attention.
Hog walleye!

Lol yah we enjoy the bbq,  nice having a hot lunch out in the water now and again.

Not that it matters to most on here but all the fish were released. Not many of those big walleye left this day and age it’s nice to see them swim off. That’s an old fish in a cold water lake like Cold Lake that would be a poor eating fish anyways.

Hi Walleyes:

Did you notice the hot air temperatures of this summer changing your fishing tactics?

My guess is that there was only a marginal change in the thermocline on your lake given the lake's great depth that would absorb the heat. Therefore there would be little change on the whole waterbody. Mind you, I do believe there might have been some adjustments at the fish hatchery. ;)

But I could be wrong. Don't you just love Limnology? A science where you are always wrong.

The warm weather has definitely made it an early morning or late evening fishery. Doesn’t seem to be a lot of mid day bites happening.

Question…is the admiral related to Yes Dear .?

Hope y’all are well . The fishing in the south has been the worst ever.

Been out twice …..nada …

The best thing I did this year was double the size of my air conditioner.

Getting ready for birding now , stay well.

I heard the fishing in the south was slow. All the heat must have made them pretty sluggish. They went into late summer feeding patterns around here pretty early as well. Which means,, early morning feedings like early, if you can see the bait your too late. And late, late evening just before dark.
