Fickle lake 2019
« on: September 04, 2019, 05:33:48 PM »
We set up camp Monday afternoon just as most of the long weekend party goers were leaving. But Tuesday morning we had the entire campground/lake to ourselves. We wanted to come sooner in the season but it was either rain rain rain or something else popped up.
Well I tell ya the fishing sucked big time. Last year me and wifey caught 37 fish, mostly walleye,in just two hours. This year we only managed three hammer handle jacks and four smalleye in over four hours. We fished the same spots using the same thing but the fish weren't there. Talked to Mr. Bunning the campground caretaker and he thinks the fishing is poor this year due to all the rain we had but I'm not sure about that.

But it was a peaceful two day getaway and we still had a good time. ;)

Here's a pic of the walleye we were catching last year.

Still looks like it was nice to get out sonny, and it’s always nice when it’s quiet, have to enjoy those times.

It's about time you and mom get out a bit after all those long hauls you made to Ft. Mac. over the years. Good on you and the missus. :)

Time well spent sonny, and no people. That’s near impossible these days in our province.

I was one of the campers leaving on Monday lol. We got out twice, took my daughter and nephew and fished along the campground and across the creek mouth. First outing and 3 of us pulled in about 16 eyes and a couple pike.

Second outing, same place with a friend and uncle in the boat and we caught about 6. 4 eyes and 2 pike. Couple walleyes were like the one in your pic.

Never got out to the far point where we usually catch a lot more. Jig and a minnow always works for me there.

Yeah we spent 90% of our time at the point and it was pretty slow compared to last year.

What camp site were you in? We pulled into #22 by the lake shore.

We used to stay by the lake years back but now with these persistent winds, we stay in the other loop away from the wind. Always find us in that loop. Usually stalls, 6,7,8 & 11 if we can get them. But two campers in our group are in their early 80's and this was most likely their last hurrah out camping. I am already taking my parents with me in my truck/trailer so they can keep coming. But that is probably over too as my dad is 83 and showing some signs of aging that may keep him & mom from camping anymore. My aunt said enough is enough lol with her cold and achy bones this last weekend(and it was a nice weekend too) and not sure if my uncle will keep going if he is alone. Time to fill their spots with friends I guess.

We have had some epic fishing off that point over the years. The lake is truly named. One day you can't believe the bite and numbers you catch, the next you think the lake is dead.

You ever fish for Perch or Whites in this lake? I don't catch many pike anymore and the ones you do catch are small so at least there are still some bigger hens doing their part. That lake used to be known for big pike 30 yrs or more. Only ever seen 1 white caught. I tossed a white jig with a minnow in after baiting my sisters hook(we were late teens then) and while I watched it sink, a white came up from the deep and inhaled it. She had no clue until I said reel in, reel in. It was a big one too. Never ever seen a perch caught but we never target them.

The walleye re stock 20 plus yrs ago worked. I would suspect there are a couple hogs in there now. Slowly catching some bigger and bigger ones every year.

I would like to sit in my ice fishing tent one day and see what cruises by. Maybe this winter.

Back in the 80's we'd see little 3-4 inch perch by the lily pads off the point. We tried catching perch through the ice back then but didn't have much luck. Lots of folk used to ice fish for whites then and there were some huge pike in there too at the time.
One time I was trolling a five of diamonds and caught a huge sow of a whitefish. I let it go because I'm not really fond of them but it did put up a good fight.
And 10-4 on the wind by the lakeshore campsites but I like having the boat tied up close where I can keep and eye on it.
Just so you know Mr. Bunning said he is going to shut the campground down on Sept. 20th. I'm sure he is getting tired of camping by now.  ;) ;)

Tom's a good guy. So is his family. Watched his grand kids grow up while we camped there. Known him for as long as he has run that campground. Ya, he told me the rain has made running campgrounds a lonely place this summer :).
