This May long weekend is the perfect time to get hooked on fishing. Albertans can cast a line into any of Alberta’s beautiful lakes and rivers without first purchasing a fishing license.

The decision to offer a free fishing long weekend came after Alberta’s online licensing system was unable to cope with the high volume of requests on Friday.

“I know that the long weekend has gotten off to a frustrating start for many anglers in Alberta. I would personally rather be fishing than standing in a line up or on my computer. That’s why we are going to waive the need for a license this weekend and let people just start enjoying the outdoors.”

- Robin Campbell, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development

The free fishing weekend will run from May 16th to 19th. While licenses will not be required for this period, all other fishing regulations will be in effect and enforced.

Progress to get Alberta’s online licensing system up and running is well underway. The issues are expected to be resolved after the weekend.

Got my licence on line today just because and had no issues what so ever,, done and done in just a few minutes..

Bonus,, I printed off three copies of my licence, one for my boat, a small version for my wallet and one for my tackle box,, can't beat modern technology,, when it works lol..
