fly fishing on Sylvan lake or rivers around Red Deer
« on: January 29, 2020, 11:22:33 AM »
Hello.

I purchased a 6 weight fly rod for use with Rainbow trout for northern bc. I am moving to Red Deer beginning of Feb 2020 and just wondering will a 6 weight be good for all the fish type around Red Deer.  Any special flys for catching walleye and jack?

Clouser minnows and streamers, Muddler minnows, Bloodworms, Wooly Buggers, Steelhead streamers, Mouse and Baby duck imitations for pike and walleye.

And a steel leader if you a dealing with pike and walleye.

There is a lot of trout fishing in the Red Deer area.

Where did you fish in Northern B.C.?

Mainly around Fort St John.  Lots of time on Charlie lake.  Also got my out of province licence to fish olie's lake on the Alberta side

I have fished Walleye for over 30 years and I have never used a steel leader for walleye.  Never lost one due to the line being cut. Jackfish on the other hand steel leader is a must.

Sorry can’t be much help fishing around that part of the country, up in the north east that’s my home. Also I’ve never ran fly rods for walleye, I do get out with the 9 weight in the spring for big pike in the shallows, that’s a blast. Walleye are on the bottom so I’ve just never seen fly equipment even heavy sinking lines being all that effective for them.

As well I never run steel leaders for walleye, I try and keep it as simple and stealth as possible even when running swim baits like raps I tie directly to the lure.
