gull and sylvan sunday
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:35:27 AM »
made it to gull for sunup.
had to search around for over an hour.
was seeing no life...
finally hit an area where i had several perch waiting for me as a dropped the hook.
after landing and releasing one i was just happy to see signs of life....
dropped the hook down again and BAM!!! BIG whitefish came in outta nowhere and crushed my hook!!!!
landed a real nice, fat 20" er!!!!
after that, it was mayhem!!!! had whites come in every 2nd or 3rd drop!
was limited out in about 10 mins....coulda been half that but i effed up 2 hook sets.....rusty.....
looked around for some good perch but after a few hrs of that i only had 2 wee ones so i decided to jump to sylvan for a few more whitefish
same kinda deal....took about an hour to find them and then rapid succession and i had my 2 more whites!!!!
also landed several really nice wallies at sylvan....too bad zero limit.....
here's how the whites looked....
ps. any guesses which two came from sylvan???

nice pics, sounds like you had a great time! We, sadly, have yet to go ice fishing this year.

Looks like a good day. Thanks for the pics. Now I just need to heal up a bit more and get out fishing since I now live right near Gull and not far from Sylvan.
I hunt sheep to see over the next mountain not to measure the next trophy!

hey dave,
yeah, in general the whites are much smaller in sylvan.
i have a theory that they're a smaller subspecies.
side by side they are very different fish. the gulls are twice the size, the sylvans have way bigger eyes, the gulls are much thicker and darker bodied, the sylvans are really black in the fins....
both taste great tho so s'allgood!!!!!!! :)

Funny you should make those comments, I had a conversation with a buddy about the same differences.

I fished Sylvan a week prior to your post for a first time with my brother who lives in Sundre.
Put about 5 hrs of fishing in and only managed to bring 2 eyes and 1 burbot up the holes and right back down they went.
