Lac La Biche
« on: January 12, 2014, 11:41:32 PM »
Hey have any of you guys ever been to Lac La Biche.  I've never fished there before just drove by always.  But now it seems from what I hear that it may be worth a little exploration.  Anyone know how the ice or washwater may be out there?  Anyone have any tips for fishing this lake.  I'd like to go after some perch, pike and walleye.  I know its C and R walleye but guys have been catching some fat ones on the rumor mill.  Also looks like the highest net pulls of perch on the test netting site.

hey B!
i spent some time there last year around this time of year.
I also heard many perch tales....
tried several spots. caught lots of perch at every spot. biggest was maybe 5". ::)
really disappointing.
near the end of the day i did C'n'R and FAT 5-6lb walleye. was a nice bonus!
i'm told there are bigger perch and whites and pike to be found. could be worth a shot.
it's a BIG body of water. really nice place too.
good luck if u try it!
Never met a fish I didn't like!!

Thanks for the reply.  Yeah I what sorta guessing that would be the scenario.  But it seems there are some big pike and walleye but I might be better off going to a lake I know something about to get them.

Brandon, Lac La Biche is the up and coming gem again of the big water lakes in Alberta.  Tons of walleye stocking and C&R rules have the walleyes returning to plentiful numbers. It always had and still has big pike and tons of big burbot.  Perch is good too if you can locate a biting school of decent size ones.

The Poplar Point winter road can provide good access when there is a ton of snow like this year.  The north end of the lake where the road comes out there is a big point that is a hot spot for big pike.  I am not sure if it is open this year yet.
Check with Walleyes (Terry) on here.  He will know.  He knows the lake well and will point you in the right direction.

I have fished it lots a long time ago with my Grandpa but not so much lately.  We used to catch great perch around Churchill park and the fishing for walleyes and huge pike was awesome up on the Owl River area around Diesel's many years ago.  It has been closed for many years up there though.  I wish that would re-open.

From what I know of Lac La Biche  it was over harvested for walleye (commercially) until the walleye collapsed and the perch took off and numbers went wild.  Cormorants moved in and did well as they like to eat a certain size of perch.

A relatively small number of big spawning perch would lay millions of eggs.  They hatch out into millions of little perch.  These little perch just swim around eating everything in sight.  if you are a newly hatched walleye you are usually eaten up by a little perch.  Big perch are a good preditor on little perch but there are not so many big perch.  The cormorants feed heavily on 4 to 6 inch perch. So not many perch grow to be the bigger perch eaters.  Just enough to lay millions of eggs to make millions of little perch.

F&W killed heaps of cormorants so more perch would grow up.  At the same time they stocked huge amounts of small walleye and transplanted big amounts of young adult walleye.

By giving the ecosystem a BIG KICK they have got the lake on the way to having a better balance of fishery.

Overflow like hell with the snow and now mild weather.  Crossed the lake on the ice road today (16th) and found out!!!  If you are going out, be careful, as a snowmobile or quad will bog and you will have a good time getting out. :)

Nice!!  That is what has been pulled out of that spot for several years, right Terry?  The "Big Bay" boys pull their nets filled with the walleye, and have "fish fries" for their close "friends".  We will never be able to take even one home for a feed.
