Leach question?
« on: June 24, 2019, 09:45:41 PM »
So I've never really been a leach user but last time we were camping this couple from BC asked me if I wanted a dozen and a half leaches as they were going home and had no need for them.

I said well if you are going to throw them out anyway then yes I'll take them. So now I have a plastic tub (covered) in the fridge with leaches in it. My question is..

How long can I keep them?
How often do I change the water? (bottled water)
Do I have to feed them and if yes then what do I feed them?
Also what's the best way to hook them on a jig for walleye fishing?

Thanks in advance.

They last a long time if you keep the water clean. We rarely came home with any so never tried to make them last.
I read somewhere they don't need food as mush as clean water but some do feed them and they keep all summer.
We always hooked them on the thick part of their "head" behind the sucker.

I trapped a bucket full 6 weeks ago and there still alive and kicking in my beer fridge . I just change the water every week or so with lake water. I was putting a single hook through the sucker and trolled obed got a hit and it ripped the leech off . So I tie a double snell now and put it behind a wobbler blade . It works well for rainbows but I find minnows worked better for brookies. I drew some class A tags for Minnow lake and plan on trolling some spinner baits and bottom bouncers with leeches and minnows. Never fished Minnow before and can't find much info on it so it'll be interesting.

I still have some left over from last May.  Fed them twice and changed the water out every week unless it got forgotten.  After a couple weeks the death toll increases for sure.   Put a rougher rock in for them to clean up on.  Got a few hundred more caught for this year  :).

Thanks for the info. We'll be going to Pigeon in a few weeks and we'll try them on the end of a jig. :)

Leeches will always work but pick up a few tubs of Parker Minnows that is very much a minnow lake. Not just any minnow make sure they are Parker Minnows. Good Luck, have you fished Pigeon before.

Yup been there 4 or 5 times and always did great with minnows on a jig. One year we had undersubscribe class c tags and had a helluva time filling them because most of the walleye were to big.  ;D

This year we have class B tags and I can almost taste those delicious shore lunches. ;)
