Skunked at Rock Lake..........almost!!
« on: July 04, 2014, 05:43:00 PM »
Managed to catch 2 small lakers at Rock lake but only because I didn't try very hard.

It's true, just a couple of days ago we had to put down our 14 year old cat due to severe diabetes and my heart just wasn't in fishing all that much. :(...Anyway,life goes on..

The 2 that I did catch were caught on a #2 gold Panter Martin trolled in 10-14 feet of water on the north side of the lake.If we would have been here in the early season I know we would have caught many more.
The campground was quite and clean and the $16 a night camping fee was great considering that they supplied free (dry) firewood, not many campsites do that anymore. ;)
My only complaint is the road in,32 km of washboards and potholes from pavement to the lake and it took us an hour to get there.I could have done it quicker with just the motorhome but wifey was towing the boat with the Ranger and at time she had to slow to a dead crawl just to stop the trailer from going airborne.I think it's been a few years since that road seen a grader.

Anywho here's a few pics.....btw...it is a lovely lake. :)

Here's a pic of an old trappers cabin.I don't know how old it is but it's been there a long long time.

Also behind the cabin there is a grave maker, don't know if it's real or not tho. :o

Sonny, the lake must have been cold for them to only be down 10-14 ft. Everything is late this year by 3 to 4 weeks. They are catching lakers over here in 30-40 feet of water and they are usually down 80 feet this time of year.
 Nice pics!

Shoot I am still smashing them in 15 - 20 feet of water trolling for eyes. Got like 5 or 6 on tonight in the bay's one dandy one close to 10 pounds. You are right Tuc it's all late this year.

Sounds about right Sonny, lakers like a comfort zone of 48-52F.

Walleyes, I'm thinking we probably won't need the down riggers until August. I only had mine out once last summer and have yet to catch a trout with it. I've been so busy this summer that I haven't had much time to go for lakers and our fly-in trip to McTavish Lk was cancelled because of too much ice. Our nearest place to fish lakers is 3 hrs away, I'm hoping to get a trip after them in eary Sept before the elk season starts over here.

Thanks for the update Sonny, great pics ! I'm heading out there sat. afternoon to do some fishing and my buddys bringing his horses in as well. Last I heard the lakers were hammering the leaches. So wooly boogers on the fly rod and I also have a rig with lead core line if  I have to get down deeper.
