Spring Run 2013.
« on: March 21, 2013, 02:54:47 PM »
Sorry Axe but I am starting this one off please feel free to add as you will.

Axe and myself have been planning a trip for quite a while,, I believe it started around Jan. we tossed a few places around and a few weeks ago finally made a decision on where we would go. Axe knew of a fellow that holds a trapline in the area and arranged for us the use of it for a couple nights. The lake we are headed to is known for its large pike. It's a northern out of the way lake so over fishing is not an issue here. I know you will all respect us keeping the name out of the stories. Despite the heavy snow and bad forecast we are going ahead as planned. My middle son Jordan will be accompanying myself and Axe is bringing along a couple fellows as well. Jordan and I will be heading out in the morning and will meet the guys at the cabin.

Got all my gear packed and will be grabbing some grub and bait in the morning. Bought a heck of a new sled for behind the skidoo today, a calf sled from CO-OP looks like it's going to be a dandy. Going to be a restless night I am truly looking forward to this run its been a while since I have had a good winter excursion..

Couple pics of the gear ready to go.

PS,,expect a pic heavy report people.

Oh I forgot to add, my son is a little leery of spending the night in an old cabin deep in the woods with a stranger called,, the Axeman,, lol...

Just keep the axes locked in the truck at night and all will be fine.... ;)

All I have to do is get out of here tomorrow through the snow.  Once I am up in the bush, my mind will be at ease.

Got back from the trip today. I will start by saying it was a very fun trip and got to meet some great guys,, the fishing not so great lol.

Jordan and I got an early start on Friday and made it out close to the cabin about 12:30 pm to find the trail into the cabin not plowed out this winter at all. We unhooked the trailer and tried to get in with just the truck,, a no go. Got in about 20 feet and barried it. So no big deal we unloaded all the gear and a couple trips in with the skidoo and quad and we had our gear in. It was also apparent that the quad was poor transportation,, very deep snow. By 2:00 we had all our gear in the cabin and a fire going. A quick trip for fire wood and we were set. We had a quick bite and went for a quick fish for about an hr with no luck. We headed back in and played some cards and waited for Axe and his crew to show up. They made it in late and we met them at the road. With the help of one of their trucks we got pulled out and a few trips in with the skidoo and Jesse's quad we had their gear in. After a good visit we all hit the hay. The next morning had us up early and after a quick breakfast we were on the lake.

Getting around on the lake was tough but we managed well with the skidoo and the big sled I bought we got around. We searched high and low with Jordan and I did the running and gunning and Axe and crew worked their way around and island searching, all of us with very little luck. After sometime Jordan got into a couple so I went and gathered up the guys and we set up to put in the whole afternoon with very little results. In all I think we landed 4 pike no big one all small fish. Don't know why,, the lake we were at is known for its large pike but I guess they just weren't hungry.

I will say it was a great time though,, had an awesome winter adventure and was able to get back into some country I haven't been into for years. The cabin was warm and cozy and we had a great visit. In the end thats what its all about, friends around a fire sharing stories. In the morning Jordan and I had to take off early as Jordan had a previous appointment to make all the way south in Med Hat. Axe and the boys were thinking of trying La Biche lake on their way home so maybe they will have a report when they get in. Hope so for their sake. I hope to get out next weekend someplace for one last go before its over for the season.

Coulpe pics.

Great report, Terry.

A big fish or two would have been nice but that is just the bonus.   I must say it was good to get out of the city for the weekend.

There is some serious snow up in that country this winter!  It is just an adventure in itself trying to get into a place like that.  Saturday was a really nice day on the ice with very little wind.  Who can go wrong with a smokie and hotdog over the fire on the ice on a nice bright spring day.  Thanks to Jordan for a load of super good dry willows; not so easy with snow up to his waist.

We saw a caribou on the way in and a moose on the way out.  On Saturday evening, we took a run on some plowed pipelines into some new areas, got stuck a couple of times but no big deal.  Lots of big wolves had been running the plowed areas back there.

One neat thing, Jesse popped a rear tire off the bead on the quad while spinning a donut when it hit an ice berm.  We tried with a strap around the tire and the small compressor but no go, couldn't build enough pressure to pop the bead back on.  We then tried the old gasoline trick of pouring a small amount around the bead and in the rim and lighting it.  Sure enough, a quick flash and pop and the bead was back on.  I had heard about this being done but this was the first time I actually saw it work.  Only took just a small dribble of gas.

We took the ice road back across Lac La Biche lake but didn't stop to fish.  There were quite a few guys out fishing there though.  We stayed around the cabin and had a big breakfast and then did a bit of shooting so it was already noon when we got out of there.  Sunday morning started out very cold at -24C first thing in the morning but really warmed up quick when the sun came up.

I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Sounds like a great time regardless of the fishing. And what the heck, walleyes, you were down in my neck of the woods?

Nope we were up north, my son still loves in Med Hat and he had to be back for a previous engagement he had arranged. He works in the Foster creek plant but he has his apartment in the Hat.
