Trip to Slave Lake for a Tournament in Faust
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:35:18 PM »
I am off to Faust on Lesser Slave Lake tomorrow to prefish for a tournament.  Apparently there is lots of dirty water coming in from the creeks and the weather isn't supposed to be the nicest either, with more rain in the forecast.  Hopefully my partner Kevin and I can catch some decent fish and maybe even a big girl or two and win the thing!

I will post pics and give a good update on fishing around Faust when I get back.

Go get em, Chris and good luck to you and Kevin.  Hopefully, the weather won't be too bad this weekend.  I hope to get out for some more eyes this weekend too.

Good luck to you Chris.

I am heading out first thing in the morning for 2 days of prefishing for the St.mary's tourney on the SAWT. It is the final tourney for our season and we need a solid placing to stay up in the top 10 for team of the year again.

I am still trying to decide if I should go fish a Sask. tourney in July. Me and Relic are kind of talking it over and trying to decide.

The Sask Landing tournament is a great one to go to.  It's well run, has great facilities at the lake, usually gets 100+ teams, has the best weather of any tourney, and most importantly, the fishing is always good.  You won't regret it.

I'll be there for sure.

Npauls, my brother Duane and his partner Jarrett are going to Sask on July 2-3 to the Big River Classic on Delaronde Lake.  They went last year and said it was a good one.  Not sure if this is what you are thinking about but the feedback from them was good.

Thanks for all the well wishing everyone, I really appreciate it.  Fishing was tough for my partner and I for biger fish, and we just couldn't get any 3 pounders on the first day.  The water was rushing into the tributaries and debris was coming into the lake like crazy.  We took off from Faust Bay each morning, and when you would get to where the Driftpile River was coming in there was a huge seam of massive trees, logs, sticks, and stumps.  We had to slow down from 60 to about 25 to navigate safely through all the crap.  There were some deadheads too everywhere else on the lake, so make sure you keep your eyes open if you are boating on Slave.

We fished the North Shore, in between Shaw's Creek and Big Point.  Most of the boats in the tournament were fishing Shaw's Creek or the breakline out from shore in 8 to 13 feet of water between there and Big Point.  The winners fished right by us the whole weekend, and my congrats go out to Dale McGrath and his son on their big fish of the tournament (6 and change lbs) and their tournament victory.  The cleaner water was on the North Shore and visibility was normal.  At Driftpile, Little Miami, the Narrows, Faust Bay, Spruce Point and Strawberry Creek, the water was pretty dirty from all the tribs and the heavy rains.  We Camped near the Assineau River, and it was overflowing it's banks too!  We trolled crankbaits day one, Reef Runner deep divers, and we fished about 12 feet with linecounter reels and fireline.  With 40 feet of line out we were just off of bottom moving 1.2 to 1.4 mph on the GPS.  Day two we fished with spinners and minnows, or Gulp crawlers.  We got slightly better fish pulling spinners day 2, but not as many legals as day 1.  There were tons of fish where we were, but we just didn't get the right bites, and I think we ended up in 33rd place.

This was my first time driving through Slave Lake and seeing all of the destruction from the fires.  It looked like a warzone, and it was just unbelievable to see the destruction.  My partner Kevin had lost his home and everything he had in the fire when it went through Canyon Creek, and after the tournament I took a bunch of pictures of the rubble and things left, and I will post them in a seperate thread.
