Ucluelet Fishing Adventure salmon and halibut
« on: September 23, 2019, 07:03:22 PM »
Ucluelet is one of our favorite places to go fishing on Vancouver Island for Salmon and Halibut.  There are so many options at this magical West Coast adventure destination.  The coast line is spectacular, rugged and wild.  It feels remote yet you have access to the beautiful quaint town of Ucluelet and Tofino.  This is a tourist paradise and people come from all over the world to experience this area and not only for the fishing.  That being said for us this place is all about the fishing.  It has the huge area of Barkley Sound which provides many option for protected water fishing with a great run of Chinook Salmon every year to the Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery.    Right outside the harbor you also have the West coast shoreline to fish between Ucluelet and Tofino. Not to mention Millions of salmon returning to southern rivers in Canada and the USA which pass by all season long.    If you have flat weather or a more open ocean worthy boat this area is also covered with a huge underwater bank from 4 miles to 25+ miles off shore which hold large schools of salmon and bottom fish including halibut.  In this video you will see several places that we like to fish within minutes of the dock and up to an hour away.  For every angler and every style of boat there is an option for you out in Ucluelet.  If you don't have a boat there are many guided fishing adventures that I am sure would love to have you as their guest on an adventure of your life time.

Always enjoy your contributions to the site Brandon, please keep them coming.

Yes the weather was unusually nice this summer when we were out there good yes but I didn’t get a chance to try out the new boat, which is fine by me though, those days will come.

I'd rather never have to test my boat out.  Wind is one weather I'd rather never have to fish in.  Your boat is super amazing though.  I'm jealous, but maybe one day if I get a bigger truck and win the lottery.

Do you do any fall steelhead fishing?

In the fall around here we don't have much for steelhead.  They kind of come in December and through the winter into April and May on the Vedder.  Lets just say I fish for salmon, mostly coho in October and November on the river.  Then it turns to ice fishing season and I'm done with the river after that.  I just can't see myself fishing day after day and never catch anything.  Steelhead does not appeal to me for that reason.  Apparently some guys have more luck.  But when I read the tournament results that a few hundred guys are out fishing and less than 10 fish are caught... I lose interest very fast.  I can wash hooks at home in the warmth and comfort that it has to offer.

Thanks Brandon. I learned quite a bit from your post. Always best to ask the local folks of what is going on. And you opened my eyes.
Thanks again.

If you want to catch Steelhead on the vedder... then plan a trip for latter part of April and begining of may.  The weather gets better and that is when Fishing with Rod catches most of his Steelhead on the river by then.  He tells me that a lot of the fishing traffic is gone as well.  Most guys give up by then I guess.  But he sends me pics and sometimes he has 2-4 fish mornings or afternoons.  That is really impressive for steelhead.  One day I'll tag along with him and see how it is done.  Then I'll let you know.

HERE IS NEXT VIDEO -

This was our first day jigging on Big Bank.  It was dead calm and the action was pretty fast and furious for salmon and halibut.  We were catching the halibut on spreader bars with hootchies and pink salmon belly.  For the salmon they were hitting Buzz Bombs and Zzingers.  Fishing in about 200 to 230 fow.  The aquatic life out on the banks is just unreal.  Very impressive to be out there on such a calm day fishing with my Dad and Brother.

Glad to see you two brother's got your father out. That must have been some real fun.

Question: Did you ever have problems catching hagfish out of Ucluelet?

The reason I ask is that the U of A marine biology department used to trap them by the 50 gallon barrel load out of Bamfield.

Good lord they are disgusting looking marine creature.

I don't know how you would catch them or why on earth you would want to.  I don't think it is a sport caught fish.  From what I read they are jawless.

Sorry: A bit of miscommunication.

Have you ever had any hagfish attached to the fish you caught.

Nope, never out there.  I have caught a couple of sockeye with small lamprey on them outside the fraser in the salt last year.  aweful looking things.
