.17 hmr
« on: August 02, 2013, 07:19:37 PM »
I sold my .22 and now I need a new rimfire.Thinking of getting a .17 hmr.
I don't want to put out big bucks for a top of the line rifle but I'm a little leary of the bottom end rifles such as Mossberg or Savage.

Any suggestions?

Not in this lifetime....haha

So I went to Ron's Outdoors in Edson and picked up a Marlin XT with black synthetic stock and bull barrel, topped off with a 4-12X40 Scorpion scope.Rifle comes with two mags, one 4 round and one 7 round mag.
I've never heard of Scorpion scopes but was told they are Canadian made so hopefully it will be good quality.

Now I have to go to the range and play.. ;D

Just got back from the range and all I got to say is.....

WOW.....why didn't I get one of these years ago.What a fun little gun to shoot.lol  ;D

There is no comparing a .22lr to a .17hmr,they are in two separate classes. With my old Ruger 10/22 I was lucky to get 4-5 inch groups at fifty yards. Now,even with my od grandpa byspectacled eyes I can get 100 yard group at just over an inch, that's pretty good for me.. :D

Now to do some fine tuning and to try different brands of ammo to see what the Marlin likes best. ;)

So what do you think of the scope Sonny?  Never heard of the brand but looked up their website and they're products are definitely reasonably priced.  I'm always game to support the, "local" guy over the big guy's whenever possible and am debating a rangefinder.  If I get my antelope draw I'm buying one.  (hey, that's my excuse  8)  )

Nice shooting!

All 17 hmr ammo is made in the same factory.  Not sure why some place in Idaho I think but I imagian differnt brands may shoot better then others.

I like the scope, nice crisp and clear, paid $150 for it and am happy with it.

So far Winchester ammo seems to shoot the best with Hornady a close second but CCI doesn't group well at all..Might have to get my hands on some Federal ammo to try.

Overall I'm very happy with this rig.. ;)
