Chronagraphs. Telling the real story.....
« on: February 18, 2015, 08:04:52 AM »
Wanted to share an outing the misses and i had last summer.  Set up the chrony to get the story on her factory .30-06 168 grain ammo and the .444 Marlin Remington 240 grain ammo.

The 444 Marlin factory fodder was very disappointing.  No where near the Remington claims of 2300 fps.

I have since been rolling the 265 grain Hornady flat nose which hums along at 2260 fps with decent accuracy.

Was pleasantly surprised to see that the .30-06 she shoots was pushing the 168 grain Winchester Nosler Combined Technologies round in the high 2800's.   Don't have a pic of the chrony screen on those averages believe you me it was a nice thing to see.  Also a nice honest 1" hunting group that did the trick....

Good ol chronies.  The good the bad and the ugly at times....

Interesting stuff to play with for sure.

You mention that the .444 was no where near Remington's claims but in reality wouldn't you consider being only 137 fps off darn close.. To me that's pretty darn close.

Would definitely be interesting to do some trials with a chronograph.

Well Remington actually touts their round at 2350 fps to be more precise.  I am of the feeling that every fps counts when you are lobbing bullets of only .186 for a ballistic coffecient.   ;D
Handloading definitely brings out the full potential of this round.  The hornady 265 grainer can be successfully pushed with H4198 without any pressure signs to 2400 fps.  Its a hammer....

Ran on of those Chronographs for years until I was told it wasn’t good enough.

Not knocking it but I have often wondered about using a real good 22 rf shell to prof from one day to another.
That is all.

I would love to see some independent tests done on some of these cheaply designed "shadow type" chronys on the market.  As an electronics engineer, I took one apart that my buddy accidentally shot...lol.
It was a cheaply made imho, especially in the optics/sensors.  They claim 99.5% accuracy though..

I like the idea of "light screen" sensor chronys that don't rely on the sky screen technology and variable light conditions.

A while back, I was playing with the idea of designing this style of chrony as a project, just no time in my life though.

I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

My though Axe with running a good 22 shell through would be to prof the accuracy from day to day on a screen type chrony.
Slightly turned one way to the next tilt up or down in my understating would affect how the bullet was measured across the screen.

Cool, Jimmy, on that MagnetoSpeed!  I didn't know that technology had been perfected yet in a commercial unit.
That is definitely the answer.

I was actually playing with some magnetic field distortion detectors about 3 years ago with this in mind.  Darn, should have kept at it.
Even copper and lead will cause eddy current disruptions in a magnetic field, any conductor actually.

I've look at those ,but I was always curious as to how they effect the point of aim or the node  of a rifle while devolving loads.

Interesting unit Jimmy,, where would one aquire such a machine.

I don't get it..

Bullet A..Equals 2130 fps

Bullet B..Equals ...1950fps

Both are .30 calibre and target is 100 yards away

It's the node that I chase using SD find a low sd take off and shoot groups.  A buddy has shot groups with it on and he says it lowers point of impact

Not good bullets would be leaving barrel at different times and on different node likely.  Past 100 yards with that much FPS difference groups would really show in accuracy.
