Everyone needs a bigbore.........right?
« on: January 01, 2015, 02:26:14 PM »
Well I think they do.. ;)

So I had bought a Savage rifle(won't do that again) and when we tried to mount a scope on it we noticed the scope bases were drilled in an offset manner, that's no good.
Took it back to WSS (north side) and long story short, they kept the Savage and I walked out the door with a  Marlin 1895 .45-70 govt.. ;)

Man is this levergun ever a blast to shoot. So far I tried Fusion 300gr,Winchester 375gr and Remington 405gr ammo. What I found a little strange is the heavier 405 grain slugs kicked less than the lighter 300gr slugs.Must be due to the increased velocity of the lighter bullet.

Anyway this is a fun gun to shoot and the recoil is only just a bit more than say a .30-06.Think I'll put a low power scope on it tho, maybe a 2x-7x cause my old eyes are having trouble with the iron sights.

Fun guns, nephew had one we used to have a blast with it. We called a moose in one year to about 60 yards he whipped out the little shorty 45-70 and nailed it in ribs with that gun believe me it hit it hard lol..

I would like one as a protector one day and for me I always thought I would put one of the red dot scopes on it, something with a quick target find ability but not necessarily for pin point accuracy. Just my thoughts.

walleyes do you remember what type of ammo he was using?

I'm thinking of using the Remington 405 gr softpoint but..

Is bigger always better?

The 300gr Fusion really felt snappy for lack of better words.lol

405gr muzzle velocity 1390 fps
300gr muzzle velocity 1850 fps

Hmm....things to ponder.

I've a blr in 450 marlin.  I prefer 350gr hornady roundnose just over 2000fps for practice and deer, 400gr hawks about 1900fps for moose.  Mine doesn't like the 405 remingtons, just not as accurate.  The hornady 325 ftx's are also an accurate choice I shoot when I can't find 350's.

Speer also makes 400gr leads but they're longer and just don't seat, "right" lengthwise; may be more for a 45/70 or 458 winmag?  I also tried a few hardcast (very few) as cheap plinking;  dug one out of the dirt and I swear I probably could have reloaded it.  I figure the projectile should conform itself to the rifling, not the other way around;  never fired another and threw the rest of the bag away.

Only factory rolled I've shot with it are the two boxes of 350gr I bought to get the brass when I picked up the rifle.  From what I've read the 450 marlin's a bit faster out of the box but the 45/70 has more case capacity so when loaded up the numbers are pretty much a wash.  I actually thought about a 45/70 mainly for the nostalgia/historical factor but I like blr's, so 450marlin it was.

Read in 1879 the US army tested the 45/70;  hit a 6' bullseye at 2500 yds with, I believe a 500gr bullet, and that was a trapdoor springfield shooting bp, so figure what, maybe 1200fps muzzle velocity?  (no idea of velocity, that's just a guess)

Good grief Sonny, before you know it you'll have a 45/90, or a 577/450!

Course, you know if you reloaded you may just know someone who'd mail you some 405's to try for the price of postage.   ;)

No I dont remember Sonny but if I know my nephew he probably went with speed so I would have to guess it would have been one of the Hornady loads but I really can't say.

Speed isn't always the answer . Interesting article on the 45 70  http://www.garrettcartridges.com/modern4570.html
I have taken deer with the 45-70 using federal blue box 300 gr and it is amazing ,how quick that buck hit the ground and with very little meat damage compared with a similar shot from a 308 .

I use a Marlin 1894 in 44 Rem Mag for coyotes on the farm. I like the way it moves them sideway, and they do not get back up. I have used 223 and 22-250 but they always get into the bush and you have to go find them. Most of the shots are under 75 yds.

Well I topped it off with a Vortex Diamondback 2-7x and not only does it look good but it shoots darn good too.

Tried the Hornady LeveRevolution ammo and she shoots this way better than Fusion,Winchester or Remington ammo.

Yup 325 gr @ 2050 fps is gonna leave a mark. ;D

I got lucky on that group DS,once the barrel warmed up the groups spread out to 2-3 inches.

And I tried a group at 200 yards, lol, the group was about 6-7 inches and about 9 inches low.

Yup,I think it's a 100 yard rifle, maybe 150 but that would be it me thinks.

But then again most of my big game kills were less than 100 yards.

Can we say moose at 30 yards? I can.. ;D

I think that cannon will knock most things down within 100 yds. It's a beauty.
