Favorite cartridges
« on: August 16, 2016, 07:08:35 AM »
I know that this one gets done to death, but Its one of my favorite camp fire discussions.  I'm a 30 cal man myself, with a soft spot for 6mm and 22 cal.  I know many 7mm and 6.5 diehards.  So I guess here are my top 5 cartridges:

1-30-06
2-308
3-300WM
4-243 win
5-223rem

My 5 cool cartridges:
1-45-70
2-357 mag
3-22hornet
4-25-20
5-30-30

Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today.

Personely I am partial to the 7mm. I don't own a 7mm but I do have a couple .270's and we run a few .280's that are fine shooting guns. Have packed a couple 30 cals, 300 RUM, 30.06, and am currently packing a 300 WSM which I must say is my favourite gun to pack so far. Shoots very nice.  My all time favourite is my 22 mag, easy shooting, good range and cheap to shoot.

That 300 WSM has alot going for it.  I think the 280 is one of the best out there.  Rimfire is so sweet to shoot.  I have a CZ 452 in 22lr that gets steady use, one of my favorite rifles.

Holy smokes,to many to list for target shooting but my main go to for hunting is the good old.30-06 and it's put a lot of meat on the table since 1976.. 8)

*edit*

But you know there's a couple of cartridges or calibers that would make GREAT hunting rounds but they sadly never to off.
Such as..

7.62X54r
7.5X55 swiss
8X57 mauser

Oh well they are still fun to shoot at the range.  ;)

Yeah its tough to pick the absolute favorite for target shooting, because i haven't owned them all. I would love to play with 260 rem, 6mmx47mm, 7mm-08, 300 blk, 6mm XC etc.  Picking a favorite hunting cartridge is easier for me.  30-06 is a nice spot between the 308, and 300 WM.  Many other cartridges out there that work, but the grand ol aught six for this guy.

An old friend of mine (rip) swore by a .338win.

He used it for years on everything from deer to moose.

I'm thinking that would be my third choice, second choice for me would be a .300win mag.. ;)

338 win seems to be a hunters cartridge.  I've known and know of some very accomplished hunters that stood by their 338 win.  Another one that has always intrigued me is the 375 H&H.

.338 win mag will always be a top North American game cartridge. I have a couple bros  that have shot them for over 30 years and now my son that shoot them and I have seen some incredible shots pulled off with these guns on moose. Solid, solid cartridge one of the best for sure.

.338 Win Mag with a stock that fits you makes for quite a combination.

The only thing I don't like is the belt on the cartridge. It lowers the amount of times you can reload those puppies.

And the bullet selection for the caliber is great.

Excellent caliber for shooting everything from smart arse coyotes, to Bullwinkle,to Yogi, to that elk Speckle posted a picture of.  That is, when that elk wanders out of the park down the the Athabasca River to a legal hunting area.

I wonder how much more brass life a guy would get outta the 338-06 compared to the belted mag?

Yeah that Bull is huge, and im sure watched very closely.    8)

Whats some of your favorite varmint style rounds?  I grew up on the 22-250 program, but have switched to the 223 rem.  If hunting coyotes/wolves i use a 243.

The 270 is a pleasure to shoot and so is the 280 , but the 338 win mag is a freight train. I have reloaded and shot mine quite a bit and it is awesome. But if I am going to do a lot of shooting 17 HMR or 22-250 is your huckleberry . The name of the game is you like what has served you the best. Then there is that dam 7.62x39 that is a ton of fun . I guess it is hard to just pick a favourite , so we enjoy many. But thinking that I could only have one for everything from coyotes to moose the 270 Win would make a lot of sense . Available ammo , flat trajectory and down range power plus little recoil would be my choice . For now .

A friend of mine built a light load for my remington 788 in .243 for my kids to start shooting a couple of years ago.  Its a 90 gr nosler with 42 gr of powder.  It was meant to have little kick and knock down a deer or 2.  i played with it the first year and absolutely love shooting it.  Took a mature whitetail with it that year at 293 yards.  Dropped him in his tracks.  Its kinda become my fun gun.  So far it has taken 6 whitetails by the 12-15 year old crowd! and one for the old guys!  lol

One of my all time favourite movies is Quigly Down Under. I often go to the Shilo Sharps web site and drool over the Quigly gun in 45-110. One day soon I will own one and plan on taking a moose with it, just cause.
