I picked up a piece of History today.
A 1942 Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30 chambered in 7.62 x 54r.These rifles are not very pretty but they kicked some serious Nazi butt back in ww2.Now I want to watch "Enemy at the Gate" lol

In the one pic you can see the soviet hammer and sickle, yup that's kinda cool. ;)

I took it out to the range today and holy smokes at first I couldn't even get it on paper at 100 yards.

Well after 40 rounds and a whole lot of messing with the sights I got it shooting a 3 inch group, not to bad for iron sights and old surpluss ammo.

Standing up and shooting offhand well that's a different story.. :-[

So by the looks of it, it may be a while until we refer to you as the great Vassili ??

You have to try and complete the package sonny and find one of the original Russian made scopes the sniper rifles were issued with..

Kinda coll sonny as Walleyes says look for a scope while you can.  Vintage sniper rilfe shoots are becoming hugely popular in the US.

I seen a scope at the gun show yesterday but the guy wanted $575 for it and that was way more than I wanted to spend.

Also about a month ago Milarm had a Mosin sniper rifle with scope and all but they wanted $1350 for it. :o

I bought this Mosin at P&D for only $199 and the only reason I bought it is because every gun safe needs an ugly gun.. ;D

The accuracy really seems to vary on them.  From what I've read the bore size varies as well.  Anything you want to know about mosin's can be found here:  http://7.62x54r.net/

If you want to reload dies are readily available, as is brass, etc.  Alternately, factory ammo is common in both hunting suitable rounds as well as surplus by the crate(both corrosive and non).  The berdan primed surplus brass is not reloadable.  I bought son one as a course grad present.  Love the vertical throw on the bolt.  You may also find it's more accurate with the bayonet on;  balances it better.

Pretty cool gun with direct tie to our history.  Enjoy Sonny, and ya, watch enemy at the gates again.  Supposed to blizzard today anyway.   :)

Are  berdan primers corrosive?  Or can it go either way?

My understanding is that they are corrosive.  We had a couple 20 round boxes of the surplus berdan primed ammo and the brass also appeared to be maybe steel?  Don't quote me on that, but the case was definitely harder than the normal brass cases.

Thanks for the link BruceW,lots of good info there.

Looks like mine is a Soviet 91/30 made in Izhevsk and it said that there is almost a 100% chance that it was used in battle, how cool is that?

Yup, Russia was Right on the ragged edge.  In fact if it wasn't for winter WWII could have ended much differently.  The remaining Russians ensured the Germans suffered dearly on their withdrawl.  Payback's a bitch and totalitarian types never have the upper hand for long (maybe that's why liberals don't seem to like history, eh?  ;)  )

Yours is a 1942 Izhevsk, and Izhevsk is just upriver from Stalingrad (volgograd now).  Being the battle of Stalingrad ran through 42 into 43..............

Also consider the other Russian manufacturer is Tula, which is landlocked far N of Stalingrad and much closer to what was the western front;  not to mention Finland, which also used Nagant's I believe.

Pure supposition, but it's reasonable to suppose your rifle was either IN Stalingrad, or very close to it.  In either case from the date of manufacture and knowing how close to the edge Russia was if it was a servicable rifle it's completely safe to assume it was in use. ( I simply can't imagine it not being in use, considering every Russian big enough to shoot one was issued one';  yes, it was that close.)

How's That for the cool piece of history you have?

'Course, you realize this could be the start of a historical collection, eh?  Next you'll be looking for a k-98 and a broad arrow enfield, and the list goes on.   :)

LOL...What a day it was,ok long story short..

A few days ago I was looking at the website of Milarms and in their inventory they had a Swedish Mauser model 1894 Carbine listed.Sweet I said I want that rifle.
So today I walk in there with a pocket full of cash ready to buy the swede, yup you guessed it.They sold it to someone else, bummer. :(
Now I'm just standing there with a big pout on my face when I see 3 mosins in the rack right in front of me.It takes a few seconds to sink in but damn those are short Mosins. All of a sudden my eyes bug out and I have a big chit eating grin on my face...M38's woohoo.. ;D
Carbines...they may not be Mausers but they are Carbines..
So I picked up the ugliest of the three and walked out of the shop a happy camper. ;)

So the answer to the question is yes..two Mosins are better than one,now then does anyone know where I can find a Mosin M44?
