New (to me) flinlock
« on: June 17, 2014, 02:26:42 PM »
I've had one or another .54 percussion rifle for quite a few years now, have always wanted a flintlock but could just never find a used one in .54.  Nor could I bring myself to pay 6-700.00 for a new Lyman 1:66 not knowing if I'd like it or not for sure.  Plus, I'm not a fan of the set trigger.

Then I spotted this beauty.  It's a .50, but I'd given up finding a .54.  Price was right and after taking it apart I seriously doubt it was ever even shot!  Can't tell you how she shoots yet, buy a flintlock and it rains for two weeks straight.   :(  Oh well, lot's of summer left.   :)  They're pretty much all made in Spain, this one's a Traditions brand 1:48, hope it shoots patched balls well, no reason not to, I've a 1:48 percussion that shoots them well.  A surprise bonus with this one, when you pull the barrel it's got a removable breech plug And wormhole.  NICE.

If I can get it sorted out in time I just might take it hunting this fall.  Click, Flash.........Boom    Now I just need a fringe jacket and 'coonskin cap.   ;D

That's pretty cool Bruce. It would be a great to take an animal with one of those tools for sure. I would love to see pics of you over some fine venison you've taken with that one.. Go of it !!

Got to try'er out this morning. Fun, fun, fun.  Went well, only had 3f for the pan but seemed to work just fine.  When you pull the trigger you can actually hear the hammer moving on the spring, the flint scraping the frizzen, ffffft...boom.  Just too much fun.  (It really fires quite quickly, but much slower than a percussion).

Gonna take some practice to hold 0 with it.  Like a dummy I just grabbed my powderhorn and shook it on my way out the door, sounded like I had lots, only had enough ffg for 6 shots.   ::)

1st shot was about 6" left and 2 low, last one was about 1 left and 1 low.  Definitely going to take some practice.
