New Toy.
« on: July 22, 2013, 06:23:47 PM »
Went to town today to pick up a new scope for Sam's gun and came home with a new toy for myself.

Have had a 300WSM in mind for a couples years now and went for it today. Picked up a Browning (which is out of the ordinary for me ) X Bolt, Carbon Fibre, topped it off with one of the new Vortex, Viper in 3 x 9 with the Dead On reticle ( which is a change up from Leupold for me as well )

Pounded off half a box of Federal 180's in soft points with it this afternoon,, shoots nice. These are not the shells for it as I would have a couple to many flyers for my liking but I will find the right load for it.. Any suggestions would be good guys,, keep in mind I am not a hand loader I rely on factory loads.

Never had the shortmag but have had a few winmag's.  My experience, 180gr is the only lead you'll ever need, and IMR4350 is it's mate.  Have tried other powders, nothing matches it in my experience.
The 180gr lead is, again, IMO, the best compromise of trajectory and impact energy at a distance.  Not sure if that'd translate to the shortmag?

My first was an Abolt when I was in my 20's.  For practice I'd shoot head sized rocks across the coulee S of our farm.  You wouldn't believe me if I told you how far it was.

(not that I could likely do that anymore  :-[ , but that's one hell of an impressive calibre)  If you've never had a 300 before, prepare to be amazed.   :)

Nice rifle scope combo, high tech, all business . I bet it is very comfortable to shoulder and shoot.

Finally got it dialled in today.. Those of you that have been paying attention I have had a some troubles dialling this one in but after sitting on the bench with it today and taking it a bit slower and not getting the barrel hot I got it dialled right in. I would do two rounds then let it sit about 10 - 15 and go two again,, it worked out fine. Actually didn't have to touch the scope much just tweak it a bit and I had her hitting nice. Very happy with the 200 & 250 yard groups. The wind started to pick up pretty good so I put it away but I can now take it out this fall with confidence knowing it is dialled in.

Sighted it in with Winchester, Ballistic Silvertips in 180gr very nice groups for factory loads..

Buddy of mine shoots the same gun in a 300 WSM and he uses the 180 ballistic silvertips as well.  He knocks stuff over so it works for him.  In my 270 WSM I use the 150 grain Winchester silvertips and can drive tacks with that thing to 500 yards.  Like you, I don't do the reloads.  The Winchester Supreme bullets have worked great for me.
