Nice rifle but is it legal??

A Ruger Hawkeye compact with a 16.5 inch barrel.

I am not a gun expert but there could be some interpretation in barrel length and the action that may make this gun legal or at least be interpretted to meet the regulation.

It's perfectly legal. The barrel is only 16.5", but the overall length makes it legal.

Here's the link to the definitions.  Note that it doesn't actually define a non restricted firearm, rather if it's not restricted, it's non restricted.

So a 16.5 inch barrel is legal in a bolt action but restricted in a semi auto......gots cha.. ;)

Totally legal, yes, same as those short barrelled  shotguns, Trapper Special levers, etc.
