Reloading the 338 win mag
« on: September 18, 2012, 02:17:04 PM »
I just finished working up a hand load for my Ruger 338 Win Mag.  I used RL 19 powder and Hornady 225 SST bullets, also Fed Large Mag Primers. My rifle is new so I had no problem working up to the maximum charge which was listed at 78 grs. There were no signs of excessive pressure and could try to go a little higher. My rifle liked 77 grs, 3 shots in one hole.  Maybe it was luck but that is what I think is best for now.  As always, start load development 10% lower and work up to maximum of 78 grs.

Very nice.  77 looks the best.

I just did the same exercise with my 300 Win Mag to make a long range shooter as well.  A 185 grain berger bullet with 78.5 gr of powder worked for me.  Tried 4 different loads and three different bullets and found that combo worked best with my gun.   Now to do some field trials on live targets.   :D

I reloaded 180 grs for the 300 win mag years ago and had good results with H4831. It was accurate and a long range thumper. Wish I had not sold that rifle, it was a Browning BBR ang shot well. I remember at the range people would pack up their gear and move when I would shoot it.Cheers.
