Savage Axis....love it/hate it
« on: February 11, 2016, 01:52:03 PM »
Love the action.
Love the .223 caliber
Love the accuracy.

Hate the stock.....big time. :(

Yes sir she's a sweet little rifle and I do like it except for that crappy plastic stock.I'm pretty darn sure that I'm going to replace it with a Boyds stock. They have some real purdy ones.. :)

https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/ProductDetail/43a374d18111_prairie-hunter-savage-axis-detachable-box-mag-short-action-factory-barrel-channel-nutmeg-laminate-finished

Tried Winchester white box and American eagle ammo and had kinda poor results. My best group (excuse the flyer) was with Hornady 55 grain z-max ammo. Also known as Zombie ammo.. :o

btw....it shoots good with the correct scope bases.  :-[

Nice group Sonny.

How much would a Boyd's stock run you?

Lots... lol

$144 US plus shipping so I'm thinking $250-$300 Canadian.

Yep the stock is lacking alright. I have heard or read, of some guys filling the butt stock with spray foam to take out the hollow sound and balance the gun better. But I'm not sure that would make us feel  any better about the stock. My girls shoot the two I have and don't seem to care, but it bother us old guys more I think. That stock your thinking about, would sure make your Axis a step above the rest.

Looks alright Sonny nothing wrong with them little guns for wha they are. But keep in mind they are just that,, they are what they are and don't expect to much out of it as far as the quality feel. In the end what would be the point of putting a $300 stock on the gun by the time you do that it puts the gun into the $700 range. For that price you can buy a decent quality gun. So I guess you have to ask yourself is it worth it.

For myself I except what the gun is and enjoy it as that,, it's just a cheap, accurate dog gun. I have friends that have $1200 dog guns and don't shoot the vermin I do with my little Axis,, it's all good in the end.

Enjoy the toy..

If you are a rural person the Axis makes a nice farm truck gun.  A nice gun for the  calving season that is about to begin.

I see the spirit of Big Bore with us.  Are you still into Savages, or a new Ruger fan?

I agree if you put a fancy stock on a cheap rifle you end up with a cheap rifle with a fancy stock on it.. lol

But I guess it's just a matter of choice.Just like adding thousands of dollars worth of after market parts to a car. Does the car drive better? Probably not but I'm sure it would look better.
I might not go and shoot a lot of dogs with it but I do a lot of shooting at the range.

Now I need to go and order a case of ammo..  ;)

Hmm...paid $28.99 per box here in town so this don't sound to bad..

For the longest time I thought you were the "other" bigbore but now I know who you are.

We had a common friend who unfortunately passed away in Mexico while on vacation.Right?

Guy in Edmonton had a Savage Axis .308 for sale.Add said he would consider trade for an SKS plus $150..

I offered him a Russian SKS with 600 rounds of ammo.He said throw in $50 and we got a deal.

We meet up in Spruce Grove and both drove away happy.

Rifle had a cheap made in China Bushnell 3x9-40 scope on it but it don't shoot to bad.Once I got it tuned in..

Next day I was getting 2 - 2.5 inch groups with it but holy smokes that skinny barrel heats up real quick and then the groups opened right up.Anyway I'm happy with it and I might change out the scope later.

Only problem is that I'm running low on SKS rifles.. :(

The only reason I traded for it is because I never had a .308 before and you know I kinda like this round.

Doesn't kick as bad as my 06 but yet it still packs a good wallope. ;)

You bet lots of game has been put down from a .308 still one of the preferred cartridges of special forces teams. It says something about a cartridge when it's been around as long as the .308 has.
