Savage rifles...what's up with them???
« on: January 26, 2016, 08:28:29 PM »
Ok the only experience I have with Savage rifles is a .17 hmr I bought for my son's 2014 Christmas.
We had to take it back since the front scope base was canted to the left.I bought it at WSS and they let me trade it up to my Marlin 1895,good deal for me..haha
I don't know if many of you are on FB but there are dozens of Gun buy and sell pages on there.I've noticed that there are way way more Savage rifles for sale on those pages than almost all other brands combined. Most adds say only a box or two of ammo down the pipe....My question is...

Are Savage rifles all/mostly junk rifles?

I wouldn't necessarily call them junk rifles but cheap. With that said they do make some upper scale models that are very nice rifles but for the most part people tend to buy their cheaper models. And yes their cheap ones are cheaply made as you know. I think in a lot of cases people just getting into the sport buy then because of the price and as time goes on they want to step up to a better quality arm. It goes with out saying you get what you pay for.

Personley I own two Savages, one of them the cheapest of the cheapest. For shits and giggles about 6 years back I set up a cheap dog fun, something we could throw around and not worry about. I bought a Stevens (Savage) in .243, put a Redfeild scope on it. It was a sub $400.00 set up. I have to be honest here that gun has been more durable than we expected. It has been around for a while and not a glitch. Because of that 3 years ago I bought a Savage Axis in .243 a package this one was around $500 for the package. This gun I like. Yes it's cheap but it shoots just fine, holds its settings and has been a durable gun for us.

For the price I personely have no complaints on these rifles again I had low expectations on the quality but I am happy with the performance.

" New shooters buying inexpensive rifles and upgrading later"

Well I never thought of it that way but it makes sence I guess.

I did see one add that had my curiosity up..

"Savage axis xp in .223 snow camo with stainless barrel and scope.
Only had 20 rounds through it, bought a few years ago and haven't used it in almost 2 years now.
Asking $450 or $500 with app 100 rounds.
 Case not included.
 Sells for $530 new.
 Must have valid PAL

But that fact that there are so many used savages for sale just made me wonder.

Thanks for your input walleyes.. I just may have to have a closer look at these rifles.. ;)

I have a few of the cheaper Savage's I bought for my girls. One in a 7mm08 and a 3006. They are great because the girls  have not quite learn how to be gentle on my nice would ones yet. They shoot very well , both filled their deer tags the last few years with them. It's is a great entry level gun, that I can pass on to the grand kids one day to use.

So I was at the gun counter at our local Home hardware today and handled a Savage axis xp in .223 and I must say I was impressed. The Savage rifles are not the crappy pieces of junk that I expected,no sir not indeed.
As a matter of fact if Naomi can get one with a camo stock it will end up in my gun safe.. ;)

No, Winchester 1885 in a 405 Winchester. Sorry for the small picture, when I learn to post pictures I'll get a bigger one up. Be neat to see and hold one of them though, not many around is there?

I fondled one in 22-250 years ago but it was not for sale . They are far and few between .

I own a Savage 17 HMR thumb hole heavy barrelled rifle and it is a tack driver. I have sold many Axis and would say they had numerous problems . I don't like the way the bolt is designed, but that is my personal preference . Lots of people love them.

What's neat about the Savage entry level gun is, it's seems it made the other manufactures step up and produce one. Ruger, TC, for example. I know there was a few inexpensive guns before Savage made a big push, but now most gun makers have one. I think that's great for the new kids starting out with having to outfit themselves, it can get add up to a few buck to get everything.

Hey DS so what are some of the things I should look out for other than fit and finish?
