Split case
« on: March 20, 2016, 06:08:48 PM »
So last Boxing day CanadaAmmo had a good sale going on and I snagged a 1000rd crate of Norinco 7.62x54r for $199 and that's a darn good price.
Today was the first time that I tried this ammo and I am not impressed one bit.I fired 50 rounds out of my SVT 40 and had five failure to fire rounds.Yes they fired on the second try but 5 out of 50?Damn that's 10% for crying out loud.
When I was picking up my empty cases I found one that was split right at the neck line.I never had a split case with Russian surplus that I know of and holy smokes I've gone through 3 spam cans of 440 rounds each.
So my first question is...

What caused this case to split and is this ammo safe to shoot?

I don't want to blow up my rifle or my face.. :o

Thoughts?

Thin neck;  manufacturing defect I would guess.  Common in reloading to see that although I've never seen one split into the shoulder.  With reloading some rifles stretch the neck and after a few (or a few dozen) reloads you'll see splits.  Have also seen multiple reloaded brass that gets weak ahead of the base (magnums).  Only brass that seems to last forever is straight walled rifle;  for some reason pistol splits after a few go arounds?   :o

I wouldn't worry about it Sonny, although that chinese ammo reminds me of those black russian 22 shells I bought when I was a kid;  up to a third wouldn't fire the first time around, you'd have to rotate it until the primer hit paydirt, haha........but when you're 8 or 10 who could afford imperials?  Besides, even if I could have I would have bought the russian as it meant about 6 times the shooting for the same price.

Still some russian around but not easy to find, not as cheap, and if you see it and want it, don't wait.......or you can buy about 2 or 3 times the chinese...... :)

No more Norinco 54r for this guy.

I'll pay a bit more but from now on it's good old Russian surplus 54r ammo.Just have to keep my eyes open for the good deals. ;)

Come to think of it all my guns shoot the Russian stuff best...

7.62x25
7.62x39
7.62x54r

Now if I could only find some cheap 8x57 ammo. 8)

Sonny, lots of fellows have been having problems with this ammo.
Phone Canada Ammo, and let them know about your issues.
They have been making it right for others that have purchased it.

Dinty Moore is to shooters, like spinach is to Popeye.
Hell of a thing, killing a deer. You take away all he's got, and all he's ever going to have.

You paid the money sonny, you have the right to get good product. Unless they advertised that some will split and it's normal, then make them accountable. Sometime we Canadian's(not saying you sonny) seem to think it's ok to fold, as long as we keep the pleases and thank yous coming.
